That Sweet Taste in The Mouth Might Be Bad News

The human tongue supports five different tastes thanks to its taste buds. These taste buds are micro hair like transmitters which send the signals to the brain for the taste from the food. While the tongue supports 5 different tastes (  salt, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami ) there are more than 10,000 different taste buds which are replaced every two weeks. Just after two weeks, all of your previous taste buds would be replaced by the new ones. That sweet taste in the mouth might be a concern if, after two weeks, it’s not gone because even if the taste buds are gone what’s basically causing it?

There are some foods which can cause prolong taste in the mouth. Some sugary foods can cause a sweet taste in the mouth but that sweet taste only lasts for some hours, not more than that. If you have a persistent sweet taste in the mouth then that would a cause of concern because naturally you are not supposed to feel any taste in your mouth other than the time you are consuming something

Due to some of the underlying causes, a sweet sensation can be felt in the mouth. Some of those causes are given below as

Due to some of the underlying causes, a sweet sensation can be felt in the mouth. Some of those causes are given below as

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder

It is an acid imbalance created in the stomach. Abbreviated as GERD, this phenomenon can lead to foul taste in the mouth and those foul taste can include sweet tasting depending upon various factors. If you feel a ” full ” or bloating sensation with some discomfort in your stomach then this may be a sign that you are suffering from GERD.

However, these predictions are not enough to diagnose the underlying medical condition and medical check-up is required for proper diagnosis and treatment. You should get medical help if the symptoms start to get worse.

Diabetes

One of the most known causes of sweet taste in mouth  Diabetes. Because of irregular and unkempt productions of the Insulin, the person could feel some sweet taste in the mouth. Since the body makes insulin to tackle with the glucose ( better known as the blood sugar ), if there is a problem with the insulin production it would lead to what’s known as the glucose spike.

Diabetes is seen to be capable of changing the composition of the Saliva. With its composition being altered, it can or cannot cause some sweet taste in the mouth. Mostly it is seen that people with Diabetes often feel some taste in their mouth, often sweet because of the unregulated blood sugar levels

You should get a medical check-up to see if Diabetes is the underlying cause or not.

Certain Diet

You are what you eat. Various diet types can trigger the various phenomenon. If you are consuming a diet high in fats and low in carbohydrate and protein then most likely you are going to trigger the Ketosis in the body where the primary source of energy becomes the ketones. This state of the body causes elevated levels of consciousness and energy but is not all safe.

Being on a certain kind of diet can trigger foul tastes in the mouth. If you are following a diet then let go of it for 2-3 days and see if the sweet taste in the mouth goes away on its own or not.

Short Chain Fatty Acids and Your Health: The Relation In-between

Avatar

Your Health

We already know that fibre is good for health but for long scientists have been trying to understand as to how doe fibre exactly affect human health? The answer is definitely not very easy. As of now, the scientist is of the opinion that the gut microflora plays an important role in the relationship between fibre and the human health—and this is credited to their host of messengers called the short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).

These SCFAs are a byproduct of the fermentation of the dietary fibre i.e., non-digestible carbohydrates inside the gut. Apart from a few remaining in the gut, most of these molecules travel throughout the body, participating in complex reactions which have a great impact on health and are also the subjects of active research.

Primarily the SCFAs influence the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and also the gut health. Their main function is to serve as a source of energy for the cells inside the colon and to strengthen the protective mucus layer in the intestines. Additionally, they have the ability to affect cell proliferation, the genes and also the cell cycle.

Apart from all this, these molecules are also under study for their possible role in influencing gut mobility i.e., the muscular contraction causing the movement of the intestinal content across the GI tract which is same for both humans as well as animals alike.

SCFAs can possibly have an effect on combating metabolic diseases and obesity as they influence the metabolization of energy in the body. Though, evidence on this is somehow contradictory.

Studies suggest that SCFAs protect against obesity by reducing the levels of cholesterol and glucose, but on the contrary, they are the sources of calories in the gut which can ultimately lead to obesity. We are still in need of more study in this regard.

On the most important known influence of the SCFAs is on the immune system. Studies reveal that SCFAS (particularly butyrate) may possess anti-inflammatory effects and also play a pivotal role in initiating the specialization of immune cells, called regulatory T cells that in turn helps them to‘maintain the peace’.

To add on to all above, SCFAs might have an important role in protecting the body against colorectal cancer, by aptly conditioning the gut environment or maybe by influencing the immune system in a manner that the risk of cancer is reduced.

Till now, there is no doubting the importance of SCFA molecules—they are the important results of the coordination between the gut microbiota and dietary intake.

Also, because the formation of SCFAs by bacteria is influenced by food intake, several scientists are of the opinion that they are the key connection between diet, the gut microflora and human health.
