Gluten is a major item of discussion these days. At first, the discussion only involved those who could not digest gluten. Today, the topic of gluten is an ongoing debate that includes high-level athletes as well as those looking for healthy diets. One of the highlights of the debate is the between meal snack that provides added energy without the feeling of lethargy that often accompanies the intake of sugary bars.

To find the energy that uplifts, many of the top athletes turned to gluten-free protein snacks.

What is Gluten?

Gluten is a class of proteins found in specific grains.

  • Wheat
  • Spelled
  • Barley
  • Rye

The gluten proteins of glutenin and gliadin added highly desirable properties to the processing of bread, soups, and cereals during the emergence of civilization.

The gluten proteins acted as a binding agent in soups, and as a facilitator for the process of molding shapes while providing an elasticity that allowed for the use of yeast and other agents to encourage rising during the cooking process. The result is on every grocery shelf where bread and cereals are stocked.

What Problems Can Gluten Cause

While gluten provides a staple protein that binds and bonds particles together for an easily marketable product, the proteins also inhibit efficient digestion in several cases. The principal cases where the digestion of gluten becomes an issue are:

  • Celiac Disease
  • Non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Wheat Allergy

Any of these conditions can lead to increased health issues with the ingestion of gluten. As an alternative to the gluten diet, those with such problems use other grains to provide the carbohydrates and proteins they need to keep the internal fires burning. The most plentiful of those grains include:

  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Flax
  • Millet
  • Sorghum
  • Buckwheat
  • Oats (In most cases)

The Popularity of Gluten Free Products

With the development of treatment for gut ailments caused by the ingestion of gluten came the solution called the Gluten Free Diet. After some experimentation, many physicians discovered their patients living healthier lives than those without gluten issues.

Soon, athletes began using gluten free snacks as a source of instant energy before and during events to give that added boost they sought during competition.

The stardom factor led to fans using high protein snacks for the same purpose in their regular lives. As the preference for gluten-free protein bars spread, companies started producing the product for marketing on grocery shelves.

How to Determine Gluten free Products

Until 2013 it was difficult to determine which products were gluten free. After all, gluten was not something visible in bread, soups, sauces or even pasta. In 2013, the FDA issued a ruling that asked marketers to label gluten free products with a “GF.”

Though this label is voluntary, it has been effective in reducing the number of physical issues that patients facing gluten issues have faced. Even with the “GF” label on a product, those seeking snack power treats should read the ingredient label to make sure they are getting a protein snack that is gluten free instead of a sugar-filled substitute.

Foods Other Than Grains that are Gluten Free

Several foods are naturally gluten free and gain the “GF” label if no gluten products are added into the processing.

  • Fruits— If a gluten product is not used in the binding process for jams or jellies, these processed products rank high in the “GF” label universe.
  • Meats— When meats are cooked without gluten additives such as those found in pasta, they are gluten-free.
  • Vegetables— All fresh vegetables are considered gluten-free.
  • Dairy products— Milk and other dairy products are processed gluten-free.
  • Eggs—Naturally free of gluten, eggs do not negate the gluten included in wheat when added to make bread, cakes, or candies.
  • Legumes— A high carbohydrate and protein substitute in any product for gluten products.
  • Nuts— There is not a nut in the world that includes gluten.
  • Tubers— Feel free to use staples such as potatoes in a gluten-free diet.
  • Fats, such as oils and butter—do not despair about using these products as they do not include gluten.

Homemade Gluten Free Bars

As you can tell from the above lists, the best snack foods are made at home. Though a “GF” label means gluten-free, it does not mean that you are getting the highest energy level product.

Adding a few of the gluten-free products together provides the home baker the opportunity to guarantee that they are providing their family with the best energy snacks anywhere.

  • Two layers of buckwheat sandwiching a thick layer of fruit jelly provide an incredible taste treat with an immense amount of energy inside.
  • Blueberry banana cake bars using oats as the carbohydrate substitute and rich blueberries sweetened with mashed bananas provides intense energy before any physical activity without the ingestion of gluten.

You can see where to go with these two suggestions. Protein snacks are everywhere; look for them on the grocery shelf or use your imagination to produce flavors your family will thank you for making.

Almost all of us would love to visit our favourite restaurant and eat out the tasty dishes listed on their menus. We do not give a second thought while ordering those dishes. We are just normally busy with the menu items and their price right? This is absolutely very wrong. If you are visiting your favourite restaurant, you should do your homework before and search out well whether the restaurant serves fresh dishes or not. Whether we should or not trust the management and their staff. All these things are really very important if we think.

So, while making plans for the coming weekend with your friends or family, give yourself some time and research the place you are going to. This way you will also be able to search for some new places for yourself and also you will realise that whether you should order something from outside or sit back and cook it at home.

Remember, the following food items you should never order when you are at your favourite restaurants.

1. Sprouts

Sprouts are one of the favourite food items for vegans. But you should know eating them while you are out can cost you huge. The reason why I am saying like this is the warm and moist environment in which sprouts grow is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. So, you should not eat them if you don’t want to catch any disease or illness.

So, don’t get lured by them. Eat at your own risk.

Yes! Those veggie-loaded beverages can be quite luring for you. On top of that frozen yoghurt, juices and sugar make it yummier. But do you know most of the restaurants make use of fruit and fruit juices to compensate for the green flavour? This makes this food item more like a dessert. Never order chicken dishes because most of the chefs believe that they are overpriced and less creative than the other food items on the menu. Also, they are served in oversized portions so we tend to eat more than we actually want. So, try to grab something else to fill your belly.

Chocolates contain a stimulant known as Theobromine which uplifts your mood and increases your concentration power. This is the component that makes them too addictive.

Those sleeky, salty and crunchy fried potato sticks which you eat at McDonald’s are everyone’s favourite whether you are an adult or a kid. But you should be aware that they are made up of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) that makes them addictive and injurious for health. MSG is a flavouring agent that is commonly used in your favourite restaurants to enhance their taste. This makes them harmful and addictive.

Cheese contains a component known as Casomorphin that attaches itself to the neurotransmitters in the brain that further releases dopamine.  Cheese, if eaten in moderation does not affect your health but if taken too much in quantity it can prove bad.
