And to ensure that a wedding party runs smoothly, there is plenty to prepare. Wedding planners, therefore, need organizational talent, negotiating skills and strong nerves. Professionals from this still relatively young industry see themselves as event managers in a class of their own. And the expectations couples have of wedding planners are high – “after all, most of them just get married once in a lifetime,” explains AnikóArzner from Detmold, who works for the dream wedding agency. “Our job is to get their heads off and really enjoy the day.”

In the profession, a talent for improvisation is needed. If the sparkling wine is not there or the photographer is stuck in a traffic jam, the wedding planner has to come up with something quickly. “So you have to be stress-resistant,” says Marion Keller from Maxdorf near Ludwigshafen, who has been practicing the profession since 1996.
It is expected that the wedding planner will keep calm during the bustle and provide the couple with psychological support.

What do A Wedding Planner do?
Even before the wedding, there is much to do for marriage professionals. This begins with the question of how and where a couple wants to marry – ecclesiastical or not, in their hometown, on a castle or on the beach of Mallorca? Creative suggestions are needed. “In the role, one is also an idea provider,” explains Keller.
Once the rough frame has been set, the wedding planner must put together a suitable package. That means a lot of phone calls and calculations, explains Arzner. Offers for room rental, food, accommodation, photographers and music must be obtained. “There’s a lot of negotiating skills needed,” says Keller.

A protected profession is not the wedding planner – everyone can call themselves that in principle. Professionals from commercial occupations, event management or the decoration sector bring appropriate foundations. Meanwhile, there are special training for wedding planners. In Zurich, the Association of Independent Swiss Wedding Planner (VUSH) offers a diploma course. And Marion Keller has founded a training center whose graduates will receive an IHK certificate in the future.
There, participants learn what is important when looking for suitable service providers for a wedding reception. In addition, they are taught how to register trade and what to pay attention to in terms of contracting and marketing. Because wedding planners usually work freelance. So you have to sell well.
The VUSH warns of exaggerated expectations: Aspiring wedding planners should expect their work to pay off only after two to three years. However, Arzner sees a big advantage of her job: For her efforts in organizing a wedding, she usually receives much praise: “Most of them are just happy and give it back to them.”
