It is not easy to focus on a fixed study routine for any student of this contemporary digital age. Pertaining to the unlimited number of distractions that this age has brought us, and youngsters being obsessed with the gadgets, the situation gets graver. Majority of the modern household has subscriptions to internet providers such as Spectrum Packages whereby family members can access it 24/7 for social media surfing, gaming, streaming movies and so on.
Since technology is incorporated in education, it has brought many distractions along. Moreover, higher education study routine that essentially involves an accelerated curriculum along with a full-time job is very difficult.
Being an online student counsellor, I can suggest some effective study habits and a routine that may help you blossom into a disciplined, competent, and efficient college student. Although this routine and habits are easy to implement and follow yet, they require an unwavering commitment on your part.
Take Notes Thoroughly and Review Them While in Class
Lecture session is the most productive time when you are attending it with a receptive mind and undivided attention. If you have a busy routine, or family commitments, or a job, then you need to take the full advantage of the time spent in the classroom. Take notes efficiently and don’t let yourself be distracted during that time.
Let your mind absorb the key terms, ideas, and concepts. Writing something down will always make you remember it longer. In case you miss a lecture, do ask your classmates for a quick refresher.
Scheduling the Study Time is Important
You need to start treating your studies as a responsibility. If you are in a habit of squeezing little study sessions between naps, classes, and meals, then stop doing that. Instead, choose a peaceful location and a fixed time slot, and then focus completely on the studies. This way you can concentrate better.
Also, set weekly appointments with yourself to revise all that you studied throughout the week.
Eliminate Your Lifestyle Distractions
I have already talked about the unprecedented ways in which technology has helped us to access information and the distractions that come with it. With the availability of so many entertainment forums online, it’s hard to concentrate solely on your educational research. Only you can help yourself here.
Have strong willpower and stick to the relevant academic sites only. Put your phone on silent mode and turn off notifications. If you have a written assignment, simply turn off your Wi-Fi when you have enough information.
Organize the Stuff that You Use in Your Studies
Instead of carrying a bulky, unorganized binder and a backpack full of papers, organize your handouts and notes into separate folders. It saves time, prevents clutter, and helps you find what you need conveniently. Color-coding is a good idea to keep tasks and topics separate.
Take Every Opportunity to Study Extra
If you get an offer from any professor to take an extra credit session or an after-class, do not miss it. Fit it in your schedule and make full use of that opportunity. It also shows your initiative and interest as a student.
Rest Well
Your brain needs to be recharged and refreshed in order to be receptive and creative to study and absorb information. Don’t compromise on your sleep. You need your 8-hour sleep to rejuvenate your brain.
Don’t make a habit of staying awake at night because sleep-deprivation prevents you from thinking critically and hinders learning. Hit the bed for a power nap in the daytime to make up for your lost sleep if you don’t get a chance to sleep well at night.
Study with a Partner or Group
Group studying is a good practice as long as the focus remains on studying. If done right, group studies are really helpful throughout the year. Usually, group study sessions are done before exams and big tests.
In a group, you can quiz each other, exchange notes, and work on disciplining yourselves. Last but not least, use online study resources well. They can be of immense help if researched thoroughly. All you need is the focus, firm resolve, undivided attention, not to mention a subscription to a quality internet provider.
Don’t worry about the cost. There are many deals offered to students and even small/new startups. A while back I overheard someone from work praising Optimum Customer Support for getting him a reasonable package!
