The fight is between spaciousness, power, price, and performance. This more or less defines what buyers can expect from a showdown of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga vs Toyota Innova.
Toyota Innova is more spacious than Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and offers a seating arrangement of both 7 and 8 passengers as against the 7 seater arrangement of Ertiga. The base variant of Innova has very little to boast about and the least expensive of the top-end Innova (GX) has a few features which can be considered. As far as features are concerned interiors of Ertiga are worth the price you pay for even the base variant. There is nothing special about the exteriors of both the vehicles except that the Innova looks longer. Both the cars are comfortable as MPVs with fabric upholstery, rear air conditioning vents, and sliding rear seats.
Maruti is definitely more fuel-efficient than Toyota, there’s no question there! If we compare the fuel efficiency of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga ZDI against that of Innova GX, the former offers a mileage of 11.8 km while the Toyota Innova offers a mileage of 15.21 kmpl.
Innova offers 2.0-litre petrol and 2.5-litre diesel engines. With Vertigo you will get 1.3-litre multijet diesel (max power of 88.8 bhp and max torque of 200 Nm) and 1.4-litre K-Series petrol engine (max power of 93.7 bhp and max torque of 130 Nm) both of which are extremely fuel-efficient. Innova’s 2.0-litre petrol engine has a max power of 131.4 bhp at 5600 rpm and peak torque of181 Nm at 4000 pm. The 2.5-litre diesel engine offers max power and torque of 100.6 bhp at 3600 rpm and 200 Nm at 1200-3600 rpm respectively. Now, the question is – do you opt for power or fuel efficiency?
Both the vehicles run on 5 speed manual transmission.
Performance and Handling
Innova needs just over 17.3 seconds to run from 0-100 kmph. Ertiga does the same in 13.3 seconds. What works for Ertiga is the combination of its weight, a monocoque chassis, and fuel-efficient engines which make it easier to drive both in city and highways. Innova is a bit shaky owing to its chassis construction and weight and you will need just that much more effort to drive it.
Braking and Safety
Front and rear brakes, engine immobilizer and child safety locks are common to both the vehicles.
Affordability and fuel efficiency work for Maruti Suzuki Ertiga as an MPV and Toyota Innova earns its brownie points based on its spaciousness and power, though a bit on the higher side as far as pricing is concerned. If you have the budget for it, the top end Innova is good as a long term investment.
