According to a recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll, the majority of Americans (51%) now believe the Supreme Court “should prevent any changes” to the accessibility of the abortion drug mifepristone “by overturning the Texas ruling” from earlier this month that essentially ordered the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to outlaw the medication nationwide.

In contrast, only 22% of Americans believe that the Texas verdict should be upheld, making mifepristone illegal in all 50 states.

The Survey

The public is opposed to the idea of further restrictions on abortion medicine, according to a study of 1,530 American adults conducted from April 14 to April 17. The opposition is strong and constant.

The first 10 weeks of pregnancy (as well as the treatment of miscarriages) have long been lawful for abortions nationwide. In the United States nowadays, prescription drugs are used to induce more than half of abortions. A doctor will prescribe mifepristone and misoprostol, two synthetic hormone pills, for you to take to stop your pregnancy.

Most Americans believe medical abortion should be permitted in their state. According to a Pew Research Centre research released Tuesday, a legal dispute over the abortion drug mifepristone loomed.

The nonpartisan think tank in Washington, D.C., conducted research from March 27 to April 2 and discovered that 53% of American adults believe abortion drugs should be legal in their state. In contrast, 24% are unsure, and 22% believe medicine abortion should be prohibited.

The future of medication abortion, which accounts for more than half of all abortions performed in the United States, is uncertain following two conflicting federal court verdicts last week.

Study Reveals Partisan and Demographic Differences in Support For Abortion Pills

Partisan and demographic differences in support for medication abortion were highlighted by the Pew study.

1. Partisan differences

About 73% of Democrats and independents leaning Democratic agreed that medication abortion should be permitted in their state. Republicans and independents who lean Republican also concurred to about 35%.

2. Age

Younger persons were more likely to agree that medication abortion should be permitted in their state, with 66% of those under 30 stating this, compared to 50% of those 30 and older. With 71% of women under 30 thinking they should be legal in their state, younger women were more likely than older ones to support access to abortion pills.

3. Race

The majority of respondents who identified as white, black, or Asian agreed that abortion pills should be permitted in their state; however, views from people who identified as Hispanic were less consistent. Approximately 46% of respondents said that medical abortions in their state should be permitted, 25% believed they should be prohibited, and 29% were unsure.

An Earlier Survey Indicates That The Majority of Americans Approve Of Access To Abortion Pills

A February Ipsos poll found that 62% of Americans believe that prohibiting medical abortion would harm women and their families. The EMAA Project, which stands for Expanding Medication Abortion Access, commissioned the poll.

Additionally, party differences in support for medication abortion access were discovered in this poll, which surveyed a sample of more than 1,000 American people. While 67% of independents and 49% of Republicans said abortion pills should still be permitted in the U.S., 84% of Democrats agreed.
