The White House celebrated the 204th anniversary of Greek Independence Day on March 24, 2025, in a profoundly symbolic and patriotic celebration that brought together political leaders, diplomats, clergy, and icons of the Greek-American community in a tribute to the common democratic heritage of the United States and Greece.

Hosted by President Donald Trump, the event followed a tradition established in 1987, reaffirming the cultural and historical bond between the cradle of democracy and its contemporary protector. Spiritual and ceremonial services were headed by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, providing both veneration and thanks for Greek heritage recognition on the top level of American leadership.

Mr. President, you confer unparalleled honor on the Greek-American nation,” the archbishop declared in his moving address. “We hallow and celebrate the Immortal Heroes of 1821, who like their counterparts of 1776, sacrificed everything in order to secure freedom for their homeland.” The archbishop reiterated the shared battles for freedom which unite the two countries, using both historical valor and contemporary trust.

Archbishop Poroyas bestowed on President Trump a Holy Cross, representing spiritual guidance and divine victory — an action inspired by Emperor Constantine’s mythic vision, “Ἐν τούτῳ νίκα” (“In this sign, conquer”). The symbolic gift emphasized the positioning of Christianity in Greek identity and its impact on Western civilization.

President Trump greeted warmly the Greek-American visitors, labeling them “hardworking Greek American patriots,” and applauded their achievements throughout American life — business and science to politics and public service. He also formally signed a proclamation to declare March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day, strengthening the U.S. government’s long-standing solidarity with Greece and the Hellenic diaspora.

Guests included Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, Greek Ambassador Ekaterini Nassika, Cypriot Ambassador Evangelos Savva, and high-profile Greek-American lawmakers and leaders like Congressman Gus Bilirakis and business owner John Catsimatidis. As a representation of the cross-section of diplomacy, religion, and civil society, their attendance underscored the dynamism and influence of the Greek-American community.

This yearly observance not only commemorates the struggle of 1821 but also serves as a potent reminder of the democratic principles and cultural ties that remain the unifying force of the United States and Greece. At a time when tensions around the world are on the rise and alliances are strained, such occasions are a welcome reaffirmation of common values and abiding friendship.
