House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries took center stage in a dramatic fight on Capitol Hill this morning. This has hampered the pace of President Donald Trump’s ambitious $3.3 trillion legislative agenda. This ambitious proposal, dubbed the “big, beautiful bill,” aims to reform the American tax code, raise defense spending, and tighten immigration enforcement before the Fourth of July holiday.
Jeffries began his speech around 4:55 a.m., relying on his “magic minute” ability to speak for an extended period. The New York Democrat used this rare opportunity to read letters from Americans who might be impacted by the bill’s proposed Medicaid cuts. His plan was to postpone the final House vote by a few hours, after Republicans narrowly advanced the debate with a 219-213 procedural vote.
The proposal is a hazardous combination of Trump administration tax policies and fresh conservative amendments. It would make the lower tax brackets from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent, increase tax credits for the elderly and workers who receive gratuities, and eliminate green energy incentives, which Trump dubbed the “Green New Scam.”
However, there is still a lot of hatred. Jeffries termed the package “one big, ugly bill” that jeopardizes food assistance and Medicaid while benefiting the wealthy. The bill’s sustainability is dependent on the GOP coming together and acting quickly, given they only have a small majority and are divided within the party.
President Trump urged Republicans on Truth Social to “GET IT DONE” before the Thanksgiving holiday. He stated: “lower taxes, secure borders, and higher wages.” But just now, everyone is focused on Jeffries and the clock.
