The name of Creeping Phlox may not sound like a plant to you. But it is a plant and looks pretty, not creepy, as its name suggests. The scientific name of the plant is “Phlox subulata”. You may not have heard about the Creeping Phlox, but you might have seen it. It is a pink moss plant and perennial and will be a great addition to your garden. It is from the family of Polemoniaceae, and it is available in sixty-five different spaces.

The plant can grow in any type of soil and comes from the Greek word that means flame. Plus, the flower blooms in spring and is semi-evergreen. It is present in rocky landscapes of North America, and it can survive without any maintenance.

  • The Creeping Phlox is a low-maintenance plant that is perfect for beginners. It does not need any extra care on your part to grow. The plant likes direct sunlight. But it also thrives when kept in partial shade.
  • You can keep the plant happy and content but do little. It can adapt to any terrain and prefers moistened soil. You can also use compost and fertilisers only in minimal quantities. The best time to use fertiliser is at the beginning of the spring or late winter.
  • As the Creeping Phlox has pointed leaves during the summer and fall, it will not take up a lot of space in your garden. You must water the plants every week, even after the flower blooms. Then the stems carrying the leaves will become wooden.
  • The propagation of the plant is a very easy process as well, so you can do it without any help. You can propagate the plant by dividing its root. But you have to ensure to cut it evenly by half.
  • When not used to high temperatures, Creeping Phlox can survive in it. If you plant it in rock gardens, the terrain can be very warm, but still, the plant can cope with it. But you have to water it frequently. The plant is not resistant to drought but can be without water for some time.

You have to plant the Creeping Phlox at the soil level and don’t bury the stem in the earth very deep. But when you use insecticidal soaps, these issues can be avoided. Another option to prevent pests is to spray a hard stream of water on the plants to wash away the mites. This will keep your plants free of mildew and mites.

When in wet and humid weather, the Creeping Phloxes can get foliar nematodes. These can cause lesions on the plant’s leaves, which turn them brown or black. Because of this, the plants will lose colour and become dull. When left without check, these organisms can fully invade and destroy the plant. Remove the disease leaves or plants and keep the grown clean of debris. Always check the plant for such organisms so you can control them.

When you notice the leaves turning yellow, the plant has some disease. It can often be an environmental issue or may have happened because of overwatering or little light. Ensure the plant has good water drainage to prevent these diseases.

If you find that the Creeping Phlox is not growing flowers and the flowers are not blooming, then the issue may be because of poor light. Also, it can happen if the soil has a lot of nitrogen. You can try changing the soil and checking if it is blooming.
