Neil Young was born on November 12, 1945, in Toronto, Canada. His father, Scott Alexander Young was a journalist and sportswriter who also wrote fiction. His mother, Edna Blow Ragland “Rassy” Young was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Therefore, Young contracted polio in the late summer of 1951 and became partially paralyzed on his left side.

This forced the family to move to Florida in The United States, as they believed the mild weather would help Neil’s convalescence. During that period, Young briefly attended Faulkner Elementary School in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Therefore, the family returned to Canada in 1952, settling in Toronto. While in Toronto, Young briefly attended Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute as a freshman in 1959. Also, there is a rumour that the school expelled him for riding a motorcycle down the hall of the school.

Young began his musical career with The Squires in 1963. Over three years, the band played hundreds of shows all over Canada. After leaving The Squires, Young spent a few years working as a songwriter. A Canadian-based band, The Guess Who had a Canadian Top 40 hit with Young’s “Flying on the Ground is Wrong”. Therefore, in 1965, Young toured Canada as a solo artist. In 1966, while in Toronto, he joined another band Mynah Birds.

Also, the band managed to secure a record deal with the Motown label but disbanded after recording their first album. After Mynah Birds disbanded, Young relocated to the United States, forming the Buffalo Springfield with Bruce Palmer, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, and Dewey Martin in the Same Year. The band released three critical and commercial success albums together: Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again, and Last Time Around before breaking up in 1968.

After the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, Young signed a solo deal with Reprise Records releasing his first solo record, Neil Young on January 22, 1969.
