Choosing A Private School for Your Kid

When you have a child or children, you want them to do well in life. Depending on where you live in the US and your income, you may be wondering what the best options are to ensure your child will get a good education. Well, of course, it is best to start engaging with them in skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic as early as you can. As well as this, it is well worth looking into enrolling them in a private school.

A private school is an institution that is not run by the government and operates independently, often with the support of tuition fees and donations. Shockingly though, not all private schools are created equal, which can lead to a problem for parents when choosing the right one. So, what are some of the pivotal things that parents need to look for when choosing a private school for their children?

Academic Program

One thing to look at is the academic program offered by the school. Parents should look for a school that has a rigorous curriculum and a track record of academic success. They should also consider the school’s approach to teaching and learning, including whether the school has a particular teaching philosophy and whether it emphasizes experiential or project-based learning.

The best private schools tend to have a set motto and teaching style, which will be based on helping all of their students to learn and thrive.

Class Size

The size of the classes is another critical consideration. Parents should look for a school that has small class sizes, as this can provide students with more individual attention and personalized instruction.

Based on research by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the average class size in private schools was 16, which is a lot lower than the standard class size in public schools, which can be as high as 30. However, this can range from smaller classes of 10-12 students to larger classes of 25-30 students. Some private schools also offer classes with one-on-one instruction or small group instruction, which can significantly reduce the class size, but this tends to be in more specialized subjects or in instances where extra tuition is required.

So, it is always best to check these numbers when looking for a suitable school.

Faculty

The quality, qualifications, and passion of the faculty are also important. Parents should look for a school with experienced, knowledgeable teachers passionate about their subject matter and committed to their student’s success.

However, you should note that private schools are not required to follow the exact teacher certification requirements as public schools. As a result, they may have more flexibility in terms of hiring teachers without formal teaching qualifications. However, in the US, it is generally considered that to teach in any school, the teachers will need to have a bachelor’s degree and experience in the area they are teaching. Some private schools may also require teachers to pass a background check or undergo professional development training.

Facilities and Resources

Parents should also consider the facilities and resources available at the school, including the library, science labs, technology resources, athletic facilities, and extracurricular activities.

Generally speaking, most private schools will have well-equipped science labs and an extensive library and computer section. However, it is once again worth noting that parents should see these things when choosing the right school for their children.

Diversity and Inclusivity

Parents should look for a school that values diversity and inclusivity and has a welcoming and inclusive community. This can include a commitment to recruiting and retaining students and faculty from diverse backgrounds and fostering an environment of respect and acceptance.

Parental Involvement

The level of parental involvement is another factor to consider. Parents should look for a school that encourages parental involvement in their child’s education and provides opportunities for all of the parents to be involved in the school community.

Of course, this involves the standard parent-teacher conferences, but it can also involve a PTA or Parent Teacher Association. The PTA is a group of parents and teachers who work together to improve the school. They organize events and fundraisers and provide feedback to the school administration.

Also, it is crucial when looking for a school for your child or children, in general, to assess how long it takes for the teachers and faculty to respond to worries that you may have. How best do you do this? When attending open days at the school, be sure to ask many of the parents whose children are attending for their views on this matter.

Reputation and Accreditation

Finally, parents should consider the school’s reputation and accreditation. They should look for a school that is well-respected in the community and has a history of academic excellence. Certification from a reputable organization can also assure parents that the school meets high standards of quality.

It is generally accepted that most private schools have a good reputation, but you may be surprised at how different their grades and their employability are when their students leave. So, as before, do some digging!
