Unexpectedly, rock icons Paul McCartney and Elton John will feature in the upcoming “This Is Spinal Tap” sequel with Garth Brooks as cameos. This is the sequel to the renowned mockumentary. The star-studded additions were revealed by director Rob Reiner, who helmed the original cult blockbuster in 1984, in a conversation on the podcast “RHLSTP With Richard Herring”.
Returning to reprise their roles are Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, with Reiner once again stepping into the shoes of the documentarian Martin “Marty” Di Bergi. The sequel is slated to emulate the style of Martin Scorsese’s legendary concert film, “The Last Waltz,” documenting the farewell tour of The Band.
Reiner commented, “The only thing that matters is that you get people who are good at improvising,” in reference to the original movie’s popularity and the significance of improvisation. With a comparison to stand-up comedy, he offered a pearl of wisdom for comedy filmmakers, highlighting the need of “leaving them wanting” and not overstaying one’s welcome.
Originally set for a March 19, 2024, release, the film faced delays due to Hollywood strikes, and an updated release date is yet to be announced. Fully financed by Castle Rock Entertainment, the “Spinal Tap” sequel promises a unique blend of humor and music nostalgia, conceived by Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer, and produced by Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matt George. Music enthusiasts and comedy lovers alike are eagerly anticipating the return of Spinal Tap, now with a touch of McCartney and Elton John magic.
