Types of Cooking Oils

Oil is indeed a necessary and fundamental component in our kitchen, and we, as Indians, use different types of cooking oils in various recipes we try out. Oil is employed to prepare & flavor food, regardless of whether it’s a side dish or a portion of leafy greens. However, using the right cooking oil will protect you against processing problems, stoutness, cardiac infections, and cholesterol blockages.

Therefore, to produce delicious Indian cuisine, the following are the types of edible cooking oils!

Table of Contents

  • 1. Ghee
  • 2. Oils of sunflower and mustard
  • 3. Oils from rice bran and olive
  • 4. Oils from flaxseed and groundnuts
  • 5. Sesame oil

1. Ghee

Ghee is among the greatest and healthiest cooking fats available in India. It is superior to butter because ghee aids in weight reduction when combined with exercise, is excellent for digestion, & enhances cognitive function. According to legend, ghee increases a person’s metabolic rate, bone mass, & memory.

2. Oils of sunflower and mustard

As it is frequently employed as a stimulant that aids digestion & circulation, mustard oil, one of the different types of cooking oil, is just a fantastic oil replacement for conventional cooking oil selections. It aids in skin defense because of its antimicrobial qualities. Additionally, mustard oil kills bacteria and viruses, making it excellent for preventing skin issues, colds, and coughs.

Given that it contains a lot of E vitamins, sunflower oil is a fantastic alternative. The oil is packed with all the nutrients necessary to maintain a healthy physique. It lowers cholesterol because of the polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) it contains.

In addition to reducing the chance of developing cancer, sunflower oil effectively fights radical damage and lowers the heart disease risk. In addition to preventing colon cancer, it aids in bodily repair, enhances the immune system, and supports healthy neurological function.

3. Oils from rice bran and olive

Around the world, olive oil has long been considered the gold standard for cooking oils. Moreover, olive oil seems to be another excellent substitute since it has a lot of antioxidants that minimize joint discomfort and lessen the chance of developing Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s diseases.

In addition, the qualities of this oil help fight cardiac conditions, including heart attacks & heart strokes. Some different types of olive oil for cooking are extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, refined olive oil, pure olive oil, and olive pomace oil.

Monounsaturated fats found in oil from rice bran can reduce cholesterol. Rice bran oil is rich in vitamin A, D & E and has antioxidants that boost immunity.

4. Oils from flaxseed and groundnuts

Due to its abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil is another excellent cooking oil. Omega 3 fatty acids are perfect for health and crucial in treating and preventing colitis & Crohn’s disease.

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol may be decreased by eating foods rich in mono- & polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are abundant in groundnut oil. In addition, it has a lot of vitamin E, which is widely recognized for acting as an antioxidant and preventing scarring or acne on the skin.

5. Sesame oil

Among the types of cooking oil, sesame oil is one of the best options due to its healing properties. Sesame oil is beneficial to diabetic patients, and it also promotes blood circulation. Furthermore, it improves a person’s oral hygiene and dental health. Additionally, it fights against cancer, malignancy & sorrow.

Most frequently, a masala – a blend of spices – is responsible for the flavors and fragrances in Indian cuisine. However, the oil used to temper those spices & cook the components is often disregarded as a flavor-enhancing component.

The most commonly used type of cooking oil in India is sunflower oil, but since we live in a country rich in culture, the type of edible oil you use depends on where you come from and the kind of food you prepare.  For example, South Indian dishes from Kerala and Tamil Nadu are cooked in coconut oil. So they are complete with the mandatory use of coconut in some form or other. One of the most favourite dishes of Kerala is parippu vada, made using nutritional dal. It is a deliciously crunchy vegan snack that is filled with protein.
