Clear Indicators Let You Know When It’s Time for Gutter Work.

If you’ve decided to postpone your gutter cleaning and roof maintenance for as long as possible, it’s essential to be aware of the signs that will let you know it’s time to deal with the gutters. Keep in mind that ignoring your gutters can lead to extensive damage to the drainage system and other aspects of your home. We’ve compiled a list of what you should look out for.

1. Water Pools Rather than Flows

Your entire guttering system should be free of debris for water to flow off the roof, onto the ground, and away from the home’s foundation. Leaves, twigs, and other organic material can easily build up in the gutters. When this happens, water pools on top of the debris and eventually flows back onto the roof.

Water may also overflow and fall down against the foundation of your home and pool. If water pools anywhere in your guttering system, it means that there’s a blockage somewhere along the line. It can lead to extensive water damage in your home. It can also cause mold and bacteria to build up inside the attic or roof space.

2. Cracks and Fine Lines Appearing on Your Gutters

Over time, gutters that aren’t routinely cleaned out may start showing signs of damage. This is usually caused by the weight of the water and debris during a blockage. In this instance, even the smallest cracks can be an indication that there’s an issue with the gutter.

Cracks in gutters can be a warning of other potential issues that may need attention sooner rather than later.

These can include the following:

  • Cracked shingles
  • Damaged fascia boards (situated behind the gutters)
  • Water damage to the foundation, which can also seep into walls

3. Paint is Peeling Only on Certain Places

The exterior paint on walls and gutters has been designed to withstand the toughest external weather. This means that seeing paint peeling on your gutters or walls next to or under gutters may mean that an excessive amount of water is continuously leaking there.

This sign is especially relevant if the rest of the exterior paint isn’t showing any signs of peeling. Experts also advise looking for orange spots on the paint, as it is a clear sign of water damage.

4. Gutters are Sagging or Pulling Away From the Wall

Gutters and downpipes should be securely fastened to the walls and roof and shouldn’t sway or seem wobbly. Sagging gutters mean that they are full and heavy, which indicates a blockage. Full or blocked gutters will buckle under the weight of water or organic debris.

Another common reason that gutters may be sagging could mean that they aren’t big enough for the rainfall experienced in your area. Gutters that are too small or narrow for the average rainfall will continuously be full and overflow. You can speak to your roofer about a gutter upgrade.

5. Rust is Appearing all Over the Gutters

Rust is another clear indication that your gutters and downpipes have been exposed to excessive water or dampness. Smaller rust spots can be repaired or sealed and painted, but if the spots are bigger, you may not be able to repair these issues. This is because the gutters are already corroded. When doing your usual roof maintenance, be sure to check for small spots and repair them before they increase in size.

6. Watermarks are Appearing in Unusual Places

There should never be watermarks on your walls, no matter how much rain your area gets. Water shouldn’t be on walls long enough to create the seepage that makes water stains. This is because watermarks aren’t caused by flowing water but rather by water that is continuously dripping or pooling.

If you see water stains on your walls, be sure to check where they start. Follow the marks, and you should find that the water is overflowing just above the top of the mark. You may even see that the piece of the gutter in that area has rust holes where the water is seeping through. Smaller holes can be repaired, and blockages should be removed.

Final Thoughts

Roof maintenance is an essential way to ensure that your gutters don’t become clogged and cause water to overflow into your attic space. Ensuring that water has a clear path to flow will also lessen the risk of water pooling at the foundation. To achieve this, you should keep an eye out for the signs that remind you it’s time to clear out your gutters and downpipes.
