What is The Best Roof for Hurricane Protection?

Living in Florida offers a wide array of benefits. Florida residents get to enjoy the mild winter while much of the rest of the country shovels snow. However, one of the prices we pay for living in a beautiful climate is dealing with hurricane season.

Keeping your home as safe as possible from hurricane damage is always a challenge. One of the most important considerations is having a strong roof that can withstand the high winds and flying debris that hurricanes bring.

So what’s the best roof for hurricanes?

Comparing Your Roofing Options

As a homeowner, you have a lot of options for your roofing materials in Florida. Some are better at withstanding hurricane damage than others.

1. Metal Roofing

There are several reasons metal roofing works well in Florida’s climate, and withstanding hurricanes is a major one. Metal roofing has the strength to repel flying debris without suffering severe damage. Metal roofing also holds up well to strong hurricane winds, so your home stays protected.

2. Asphalt Shingles

While asphalt shingles are a common and affordable roofing option, they don’t hold up as well to hurricane conditions. Shingles are easily torn off by strong winds, and they can be cracked and broken by debris.

3. Tile Roofing

Roofing composed of tile, whether ceramic or another material, is typically stronger than asphalt shingles. However, they have the same issue of losing pieces to high winds or debris.

4. Slate Roofing

One of the longest-lasting types of roofing is slate. It stands the test of time, but there are drawbacks. The biggest issue with slate is its price tag. It costs far more than most types of roofing. Even with longer life and high quality, slate doesn’t hold up against hurricanes like a metal roof.

Metal is the Best Roofing for Hurricanes

When it comes to protecting your home from hurricane damage in Florida, metal roofing is the best way to go. It stands up to higher force winds than other types of roofing. Plus, metal roofing lasts a long time, and it’s an environmentally responsible material to choose. In short, metal roofing just works well in Florida.
