Mythological Significance of Elephants and Elephant Art

1. Buddhism & Elephants

White elephants have held a special significance in Buddhist legends. Buddha’s Mother, Queen Maya, did not give biological birth to the lord. Instead, a white elephant appeared in her dream and gave her a white lotus flower.

The flower circled the Queen thrice and entered straight into her womb. When she woke, she realized it was the dream of Omen, the divine, giving her the blessing of conceiving a child.

While the white elephant was the symbol of purity, divinity, and a calm mind, the grey elephant, too, appeared as the agitated soul to get off the path to reach enlightenment. Thus, you will find paintings of elephants in most Buddhist temples and with people who believe in Buddhism.

2. Hinduism & Elephants

Elephants are considered the most sacred in Hindu mythology, for they depict their favorite god Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is portrayed with an elephant head and a human body. However, he is the symbol of protection, luck, and good fortune.

Also, white elephants are associated with Lord Indra, the lord of fire, thunder, rain, river, and lighting. In Hindu mythology, he is seen making his combat on a white elephant.

You will mostly find elephant art in the houses of Hindus as part of their worship and belief. Be it paintings or photographs, they are mostly presented in every form.

3. Christianity & Elephants

Elephants are considered to have a strong resemblance of chastity, patience, and temperance. They even consider them the impression of Adam and Eve in their male and female forms. These are often imagined as the symbolism of a man without bones, and an elephant falling is the sign of a man in sin.

However, the Asian culture replicates an elephant with chastity, patience, and divinity. In fact, certain Asians denote a cosmic elephant as the one carrying the weight of the world on him.

This is why he is considered divine and also a deity to worship. Thus, elephant paintings are also found in the house of those following the Christian tradition.

4. Chinese Culture & Elephants

In Chinese culture, cosmic elephants are a symbol of the structure of the universe. They are also a part of stability, with their four legs being the pillars holding back the body. In fact, two elephants stand in front of the door depicting protection.

The Chinese also believed in elephants to symbolize happiness and good luck. In Feng Shui, elephants also depict fertility, passion, wisdom, and protection, all on the basis of the position they are in. For instance, the trunk up is known for good luck, while the trunk down is for fertility. This is how every elephant creation has its own meaning.

Elephant paintings are still a great part of Chinese culture.

African Mythology strongly connects elephants as the mighty king who will settle every animal’s disputes leading to prosperity and peace. Its depiction as powerful, strong, and knowledgeable has made elephant art the mightiest in African culture.
