Gregg Popovich Publicly Shuts Down Booing

Gregg Popovich clearly disapproves of booing, particularly when directed towards former San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard.  During the second quarter of Wednesday night’s game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Clippers, he took hold of a microphone to reprimand the home fans for booing Kawhi Leonard, the former Spurs star.

In the matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers in San Antonio on Wednesday, the loyal fans at Frost Bank Center showered Leonard with boos at every possible moment. Whenever Leonard has returned to San Antonio, Spurs fans have consistently expressed their disapproval with boos.

Despite his crucial role in helping the Spurs secure a championship and earning the 2014 NBA Finals MVP title, Leonard requested a trade in 2018 due to an extended disagreement with the team regarding his injury rehabilitation.

He took hold of a microphone to reprimand the home fans for booing Kawhi Leonard, the former star of the Spurs. He shouted,

“Can we stop all the booing and let these guys play? It’s got no class, it’s not who we are. Knock off the booing.”

It’s challenging to recall the last instance when a coach took such a step during a game. Interestingly, the booing intensified after Coach Pop took control of the microphone.

Popovich is keen on preventing the perception of the Spurs as a franchise whose fans would boo a former star, even though Leonard’s departure unfolded under distinctive circumstances. However, the fans, irrespective of their legendary 74-year-old head coach’s disapproval, can express themselves as they see fit.

Popovich’s choice to address the crowd at that moment brings to mind the actions of former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Sam Wyche. In 1989, Wyche rebuked the home crowd for tossing snowballs during a game, admonishing them with the boast, “You don’t live in Cleveland!”
