The temperature is rising, birds are chirping, and trees are growing full with leaves. That can only mean one thing: summer is finally here. Summer is a popular time for patio renovations. Understandably, homeowners want to make the most of the good weather by creating a comfortable, inviting outdoor environment on their property. But many renovators forget to think about the long term when improving their back patio. They optimize the space for summer use, but do not consider the year-round implications of their decisions.

If you are renovating your back patio, ensure that you choose materials and appliances that withstand all seasons. Here are a few tips for creating an all-weather back patio.

Start with Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is the ideal choice for an all-weather patio. It is robust enough to withstand big swings in temperature and heavy precipitation. It’s easy to maintain (a bonus when spring cleaning comes around). It also resists stains and weeds, and doesn’t fade over time.

In short, stamped concrete is perfect for patios. Find a reputable stamped concrete contractor in your area and contact them about your project. Then, choose from several architectural finishes to suit your unique property.

Heat Things Up

If you live in a cold climate, you will need outdoor heaters for the winter (and shoulder seasons). There are several options to choose from, and each choice has its advantages.

Portable fire pits are an excellent choice if you want to keep the patio clear during the summer, but fixed fire pits can be a stunning central feature. Propane, natural gas, and electric tower heaters burn cleanly, offering warmth without any cleanup. But wood heaters remain a popular choice because they are reminiscent of campfires. Consult this review round-up to choose the right heater for your home.

Add Sheltering Elements

The winter is cold enough without the added chill of a biting wind. Consider adding sheltering elements like a fence or shrub row to make your patio comfortable for year-round use. In general, any fence styles or plants that offer privacy will also provide wind protection.

And to protect guests against unexpected precipitation, you may also consider adding a gazebo. Gazebos can either be permanent, in which case you can integrate them into your patio layout, or assembled for special occasions.

Choose the Right Patio Furniture

With your stamped concrete in and your heaters on full blast, you will need somewhere to sit and eat. Don’t make the mistake of buying unsuitable furniture for outdoors. The long-term costs of having to seasonally replace cheap patio furniture far outweigh the one-time cost of investing in good outdoor tables and chairs.

Teak, resin wicker, polypropylene and aluminum are the best choices since they are durable enough to withstand rain and cold. Read this article for more information on choosing the right patio furniture. If you plan on renovating your patio this summer, remember to think about the long term.

Find an expert stamped concrete contractor, choose your ideal heater, add sheltering elements and pick the right furniture.
