The toxicology report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office reveals Matthew Perry died of “acute effects of ketamine”. The exact method of intake is still unknown. Contributing factors in the Friends actor’s death included drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine. The manner of death was ruled an accident.
Recently, the autopsy report brought a new edge to the case. Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy before his death, reportedly for depression and anxiety. Perry died on Saturday, October 28, 2023.
The authorities arrived at his home in Los Angeles. It was around 4 p.m. He was found in a hot tub. According to the Los Angeles Times, there were no signs of foul play or drugs at the scene. First responders were called for a cardiac arrest, according to a source which first reported the news.
Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic, meaning it makes patients feel detached from their pain and environment. It can lead users to feel calm and become immobile, and it can also act as a pain reliever, cause amnesia and provide hallucinogenic effects in certain dosages.
The hallucinogenic has long been abused recreationally as a “club drug” and to facilitate sexual assault. Still, it has been recognised for its medical and healing properties much more recently.
Dr Michael Baden, former chief medical examiner of New York City, forensic pathologist and Fox News contributor, explained that veterinarians initially used ketamine. Perry’s last known treatment was more than one week before his death. The medical examiner determined…
“The ketamine in his system at death could not be from that infusion therapy since ketamine’s half-life is 3 to 4 hours or less.”
The case was ruled as an accident. However, recent reports are pointing towards a deeper investigation.
