Bill Maher gained fame as the host of “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.” The show aired on Comedy Central from 1993 to 1997 and ABC from 1997 to 2002. It began with Maher’s monologue, followed by introducing guests from different backgrounds like showbiz, politics, and more.

They discussed various topics, making the show popular and earning awards. However, after Maher’s controversial comments following the September 11 attacks, the show faced backlash, losing advertising support. As a result, ABC didn’t renew his contract, leading to the show’s cancellation on June 16, 2002.

Real Time

Bill Maher began hosting, co-producing, and co-writing the HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher” in 2003. The 18th season of the show started on January 19, 2020. It’s like “Politically Incorrect” but has more experts discussing topics.

These experts include journalists, professors, and politicians, rather than just celebrities. “Real Time” has been successful and has been nominated for over 10 Primetime Emmy Awards and six Writers Guild Awards.

Despite being nominated 22 times, Maher hasn’t won an Emmy yet, which is a record for the most nominations without a win. He was also ranked 38th on Comedy Central’s list of 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time in 2005 and got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in September 2010.

Personal Life

Bill Maher has never been married. In 2003, he had a relationship with Coco Johnsen, a former Playboy Cyber Girl, which lasted for 17 months. After they broke up, Johnsen sued Maher for $9 million, claiming “pain and suffering” and alleging that he had promised to marry her.

However, the lawsuit was dismissed in May 2005. He has been romantically linked to other women as well, including bestselling author and former model Karrine Steffans, science educator and journalist Cara Santa Maria, and singer Anjulie Persaud.

Maher is involved in several advisory boards, such as Project Reason, which promotes science and secular values, and NORML (The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws). He has been a board member of PETA since 1997.
