Common Problems with Pool Covers & How to Fix Them

On a hot summer day, there is nothing more soothing and refreshing than a dip in your backyard pool. However, it is important to take care of your pool to enjoy this luxury all season long. An electric pool cover or pool enclosure offers you a convenient way to protect your pool against debris, sunlight, mosquitoes, and other nasty creatures. However, overtime pool covers suffer damage that need to be fixed immediately else you may have to pay for costly repairs and replacements.

Herein, the blog will discuss some of the most common pool cover problems

1. Rips and tears

The cover protects your pool from all external agents. However, this puts the structural integrity of your pool cover in danger. Twigs, tree limbs, and debris put extra weight and can cause the cover to rip apart or tear from corners.

Rips and tears

Keep the patch kit handy to mend any small holes. It is easier to fix a tiny tear than a huge cut. If the tear is too big, you may have to invest in a new pool cover.

2. Saggy

This is a very common problem. A pool cover can lose its shape and sag due to myriad reasons like:

  • Debris and snow falling from the top
  • Accumulated water on the top
  • Pool cover is not installed properly
  • The cover is too large for the pool

Whatever be the reason, follow a few tips to prevent pool cover from sagging:

  • Tighten the cover from all corners
  • Remove water, snow, or debris
  • Maintain the water level at least 18-inch
  • Use water bags or tubes
  • Choose the cover that fits your pool perfectly

3. Standing Water on Cover

With melting ice and rains, you can’t prevent water accumulation on the pool covers. It can serve as a breeding ground for algae, mosquitoes, and other tiny creatures that can cause holes in your cover.

The best bet is to buy a pump as it is used to remove water most safely and effectively.

4. Chlorine ruins pool covers

Chlorine ruins pool covers

While chlorine is important to shock the pool and prevent algae growth, its high quantities can have adverse effects on pool covers.

Some of the tips to follow are:

  • Maintain the chlorine level of your pool anywhere between 1.5 ppm to 3 ppm.
  • After shocking your pool, leave it undisturbed and open for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Use non-chlorine shocks to prevent premature aging of the cover

Maintenance tips

To make sure your pool cover survives for a longer time, follow a few tips:

  • Regularly remove dead leaves, branches, and other debris
  • Check for wear and tear
  • Clean and wipe pool cover after every three months
  • Tighten the cover
  • After adding chemicals, keep the cover aside

In the end…

Installing a pool cover is a vital part of overall pool maintenance. Not only it helps to keep your pool clean and healthy but also safeguards your kids and pets from accidental drowning.

So, make sure to protect your pool cover against any problems and damages.
