On April 4, 1944, dancer Vera and businessman Armand welcomed Craig T. Nelson into the world in Spokane, Washington. At Lewis and Clark High School, where he went to, he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Nelson enrolled in Central Washington University after his graduation but failed all of his classes there. His theatrical teacher at Yakima Valley College gave him the motivation to continue acting, and he eventually enrolled there. At the University of Arizona, Nelson continued to study acting before quitting in 1969 and relocating to Hollywood. He had a brief stint there as a security guard at a soap factory.

Personal Life

Nelson wed Robin McCarthy in 1965, and the two went on to have three children before divorcing in 1982.

Further, Craig wed Doria Cook, a free-lance writer, martial arts teacher, and former actress, in 1987.

Career Beginnings

Nelson got his start in the entertainment industry as a comedian and was a founding member of the Groundlings improv and sketch comedy group in Los Angeles. Furthermore, he collaborated with Barry Levinson and Rudy De Luca to create a comedic group that frequently appeared at the comedic Store. However, Nelson eventually lost interest in this line of employment and relocated to Montgomery Creek, a small rural town in California. He accepted a wide range of odd jobs, including those of a plumber, surveyor, carpenter, caretaker and high school teacher.

Nelson’s first television appearance occurred in a 1973 episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” He made cameos on “Charlie’s Angels” and “Wonder Woman” five years later. Later, Nelson appeared in “How the West Was Won” episode, “Diary of a Teenage Hitchhiker,” and “The Promise of Love,” both of which were television films. In the early 1980s, he made guest appearances on “WKRP in Cincinnati” and “Private Benjamin,” as well as in the television movies “Murder in Texas” and “Paper Dolls.” Nelson played one of the main characters in the crime drama “Chicago Story” in 1982, which was his largest role to date. The show ran for only 13 episodes, though.

In the ABC drama “Call to Glory,” in which he played USAF pilot Colonel Raynor Sarnac, he then served as cast leader. Between 1984 and 1985, the show had 24 episodes. Nelson ended the decade by playing parts in the television films “Alex: The Life of a Child,” “Murderers Among Us: The Simon Wiesenthal Story,” and “The Ted Kennedy Jr. Story”.

The ABC sitcom “Coach,” which ran for a highly successful nine seasons from 1989 to 1997, featured Nelson’s most well-known television performance as collegiate football coach Hayden Fox. Nelson received the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy Award for his work on the programme.

Nelson’s next major role, which he played from 2000 to 2004, was Chief Jack Mannion on the crime drama “The District.” Later in the decade, he appeared frequently on “My Name is Earl” and “CSI: NY.” On the NBC dramedy series “Parenthood,” Nelson played the family patriarch Ezekiel Braverman from 2010 to 2015. Along with “Young Sheldon,” he also had recurring roles on “Grace and Frankie” and other projects.

Motorsports Career

Nelson is a devoted racing fan and racer outside of acting. He took part in the Toyota Celebrity Long Beach Grand Prix in 1991, finishing ninth overall. He established Screaming Eagles Racing the next year alongside John Christie. Nelson raced Spice SE90s with various engines from 1994 to 1997 in the IMSA World Sports Car Championship.

Real Estate

A five-acre piece of oceanfront property on the Hawaiian island of Kauai was bought by Craig and his second wife Doria in 1995. They eventually constructed a 2,700 square foot house there. They put the house up for sale in July 2019 for $14 million. Additionally, Craig bought a sizable house for them in 1985 from a vacant site in Malibu’s Point Dume neighbourhood.
