Did you know that in Maine, October is officially lobster month? Well, now you do! Although many people think of lobster as a summer food, you can actually enjoy this delicacy year-round. In fact, most of the harvest is done from September through November, with the peak being in October. This, coupled with Maine being known for its lobster, inspired the governor of Maine to declare October as “Maine Lobster Month.”
Even if you don’t live in Maine, you can still celebrate by cooking up a delicious meal with this east coast delicacy. Those who do not have easy access to lobster in their state can order lobster online and have it delivered right to their door!
Here are some recipes to try out this month using lobster.
1. Grilled Lobster Tails
Lobster tail is a go-to when cooking with lobster, and for a good reason. They’re absolutely delicious and relatively easy to make.
Start by parboiling your lobster before throwing it on the grill with some butter. You can choose to keep it simple by just grilling with plain butter, or you can add other ingredients to your butter like garlic, thyme, and rosemary to add a bit more flavor.
Once off the grill, serve the tails with extra melted butter for dipping and a side of potato salad.
2. Lobster Roll
Lobster rolls are a quick and casual way of incorporating lobster into your diet this month. Think of the contents of the roll as being similar to tuna or chicken salad. Simply mix the meat with mayo and any herbs and veggies you’d like. Common additions include celery, lemon, and shallot. Add your mixture onto a toasted bun and enjoy!
3. Lobster Risotto
Risotto can be a tricky and time-consuming dish to make, but once you’ve got it down, adding in lobster is a simple way to take your meal to the next level. Cook your risotto as usual, and once it has reached the right consistency, add in your lobster meat and butter. Try adding in mascarpone or cream cheese and lemon zest a la chef Gordon Ramsey to elevate the dish even more. While it may seem tedious, try using the lobster shells to make the stock for your risotto. It will be well worth it for the added flavor.
4. Lobster Bisque
Lobster bisque is the perfect warm and hardy meal to make on a chilly fall night. As with the risotto, try to make your own stock using lobster shells. This is not a requirement for making a delicious bisque but will certainly help bring out the flavor. The base of the bisque is not unlike most other soups. You’ll need stock, mirepoix, bouillon, and tomato paste. Once thickened, pour the soup into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour the blended soup back into the pot and stir in your lobster and heavy cream.
Make a big batch and freeze the leftovers so you can continue to enjoy this delicious meal for weeks to come.
