Europe or Bust: What to Now Expect from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United

As the Premier League season approaches its final weeks, two of England’s biggest clubs find themselves in positions few would have predicted last August. Manchester United sit 14th in the table, while Tottenham occupy 16th place—stark contrasts to their usual aspirations of Champions League qualification that football odds had predicted. Yet, with European ambitions in both Manchester and North London, it’s hard to know what to expect from upcoming fixtures in the final weeks.

Amid domestic disappointment, both clubs have found unexpected refuge in the Europa League, where their fortunes tell a different story altogether.

Last Thursday highlighted this striking duality perfectly. United’s dramatic 5-4 extra-time victory over Lyon at Old Trafford completed a remarkable 7-6 aggregate triumph, while Tottenham’s disciplined 1-0 win in Frankfurt secured their own passage to the semi-finals with a 2-1 aggregate score.

The Easter weekend brought both sides crashing back to Premier League reality. Amorim’s heavily rotated United side fell to Wolves at home, undone by Pablo Sarabia’s free kick, while Tottenham suffered defensive frailties against Nottingham Forest despite fielding many first-team regulars.

These contrasting performances reveal a clear strategic shift: the Europa League has become the priority for both clubs.

Following United’s thrilling comeback against Lyon—where Harry Maguire’s 122nd-minute winner capped a remarkable extra-time revival after goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo—Amorim’s focus has clearly narrowed.

The Portuguese manager knows that European glory represents United’s only remaining route to Champions League football next season.

For Postecoglou, the Frankfurt victory provided rare evidence that his Tottenham project can deliver when it matters most. After months of inconsistent league form, European success would offer concrete validation of his methods and philosophy.

As the semi-finals approach—United facing Athletic Bilbao and Tottenham meeting Bodo/Glimt—expect both managers to increasingly treat Premier League fixtures as secondary concerns. The tantalizing prospect of an all-English final in Bilbao on May 21 looms large for both clubs.

This shift will likely manifest in team selections over the coming weeks. Key players like Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Højlund, Heung-Min Son, and James Maddison can expect reduced Premier League minutes as both managers protect their assets for those remaining European nights.

For supporters accustomed to seeing their clubs fight for every league point—not like they had turned many into results as it is — this creates an even more unusual dynamic. The sight of weakened teams in Premier League fixtures would typically cause frustration, but the potential reward—a European trophy and Champions League qualification—justifies such pragmatism.

Both clubs also understand the psychological value of silverware. United, still adjusting to Amorim’s methods after years of underachievement, need tangible success to build belief in their new direction.

They at least have recent experience of Europa League triumph, having claimed the trophy under José Mourinho in 2017, and have collected silverware as recently as last season’s League Cup. Tottenham’s hunger runs deeper—their trophy drought stretches back to 2008, adding a layer of historical urgency to Postecoglou’s European campaign.

The financial implications add further weight to their European campaigns. Missing Champions League football for another season would severely limit both clubs’ summer transfer ambitions, adding pressure to what have become must-win European ties.

As May approaches, expect domestic fixtures to become increasingly peripheral to both clubs’ narratives. For United and Tottenham, this season will ultimately be judged not by their disappointing Premier League positions but by events in Bilbao next month.

Should these two Premier League giants meet in the final, it would provide a fitting conclusion to their seasons—two proud clubs seeking redemption through European glory, with one able to transform an otherwise forgettable campaign into one that will be remembered for years to come.
