Top Gun: Maverick is finally making its way into a streaming platform after months of anticipation. Paramount+ declared the streaming release date of the Tom Cruise film. In fact, the film makes it to the top as the highest-grossing film of 2022. Top Gun: Maverick had its theatrical release on May 27 this year. Indeed, the film will stream on Paramount+ from Thursday onwards, that is, December 22. Top Gun: Maverick earned $1.5 billion worldwide. Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish had previously stated that Top Gun: Maverick would make its way to Paramount+ before the end of the year. The company mostly releases big films for streaming 45 days after their theatrical release.
However, since Top Gun: Maverick carved out its name as the highest-grossing film of the year, Paramount took the decision not to rush for its streaming release. Thus, the film will be available for streaming on Paramount+ in the holiday season.
In August this year, the film had a digital release. Thus, it is now up for purchase or rent from Amazon Prime Video, YouTube Movies, and Apple TV. In fact, the audiences could see the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD from November 1.
The central storyline of the film
In the film we see Pete “Maverick” Mitchell forging ahead as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a singular assignment, Maverick must encounter the ghosts of his past. He must also come to terms with his deepest fears. All this culminates in a mission that asks for the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.
About the film
Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick. Indeed, this film is the sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun and the second addition in the Top Gun film series. Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie have conceived the text of the film. In the film, Maverick deals with his past while training a group of younger Top Gun graduates. In fact, among the graduates is the son of his deceased best friend. Maverick trains them all for a perilous mission.
Plot
In the film we see Maverick reuniting with his former girlfriend Penny Benjamin. It is to Penny that Maverick confesses. He tells her that Rooster’s mother before her death made Maverick promise that Rooster would not become a pilot. However, Rooster is ignorant of the promise. Thus, he angrily begrudges Maverick for hindering his military career and blames him for his father’s death. Maverick is unwilling to further interfere with Rooster’s career. However, the only other option is to send him on the extremely dangerous mission. He confesses his doubts to Iceman who we see suffering from terminal throat cancer. Before dying, Iceman tells Maverick that it is time to let go. Iceman further reassures him that both the Navy and Rooster will require Maverick.
Indeed, the dangerous mission culminates into success. Towards the end of the film, Rooster helps Maverick work on his P-51 Mustang. Indeed, Rooster gazes at a photo of their mission’s success. In fact, he also sees a photo of his dead father and a young Maverick. Lastly, we see Penny and Maverick flying off into the heart of the sunset in the P-51.
