A 47-year-old German tourist is missing after a shark attack during a diving trip in the Bahamas. The woman started diving around 10:30 a.m. in the Tiger Beach area. Shortly after entering the water, a shark attacked her. She briefly surfaced after the attack but disappeared again and has not been seen since. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and her diving equipment has been found.
The diving trip aimed to encounter tiger sharks, but unfortunately, the woman faced an aggressive and “massive” tiger shark, suspected to be behind Tuesday’s attack. Tiger sharks can reach lengths of up to 18 feet and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. The incident occurred at 10:30 AM, and the woman had only been in the water briefly before the tragic encounter.
There’s been no sign of her since. In a related incident in June, a 73-year-old woman lost her leg to a shark attack in the Bahamas while climbing onto a boat. Heidi Ernst from Iowa was the victim of that attack.
The aftermath of the shark attack led to the amputation of the woman’s leg. Recent years have seen increased reported shark attacks in the Bahamas and other areas. Last summer, the New York/New Jersey area also experienced a rise in shark attacks, prompting experts to offer safety tips.
The 47-year-old German tourist, on vacation and participating in a diving expedition in the Grand Bahamas’ West End, was attacked by a shark on Tuesday. The shark pulled her below the surface, and she has not reappeared despite search efforts. The rescue team recovered only her diving gear. However, there is not much hope. There is a high chance the woman is already dead.
