Grant Hill and his family reside in a lavish mansion in Florida, nestled beside a serene lake. The mansion, valued at approximately $13 million, boasts seven bathrooms, a swimming pool, a library, and a host of luxurious amenities. Additionally, Hill possesses multiple properties in his hometown and across the USA.

Education

He went to South Lakes High School, where he played basketball and earned the title of Virginia Mr. Basketball in 1990. But his parents had different ideas for his college—his mother favoured Georgetown University, while his father leaned toward the University of North Carolina.

However, Hill chose Duke University. In college, he played basketball for the Blue Devils for four years, helping them win national titles in 1991 and 1992. This made Duke the first Division I basketball program to win back-to-back titles since Indiana University did it in 1976.

Moreover, during his college life, Hill set a record by becoming the first ACC player who achieved more than 1,900 points, 400 assists, 700 rebounds, 200 steals, and 100 blocked shots.

Because of his remarkable college career, Hill’s jersey number was retired, making him the eighth player in Duke’s history to receive this honour. He’s also remembered as one of Duke’s best basketball players ever and is even considered one of the finest college players of his time. He finished his studies at Duke in 1994, majoring in history and political science.

Personal Life

Anita Baker introduced Hill to Canadian singer Tamia Marilyn Washington, also known as Tamia, in Detroit, Michigan. They got married on July 24, 1999, and now have two daughters. Their family resides in Windermere, Florida.

Hill has an impressive collection of African-American art. Some pieces were part of a travelling exhibition from 2003 to 2006. He’s also deeply involved in charity work.

Moreover, he gave money to the daycare centre his father established in New Haven, Connecticut. His father started this centre after finishing his studies at Yale University, aiming to help local families.

Additionally, Hill took on the role of Vice-Chairman for the Board of Directors of the Special Olympic World Summer Games in 1999, which happened in North Carolina. In 2003, he experienced a serious health scare due to a methicillin-resistant infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

This incident inspired him to become a strong supporter of MRSA awareness and prevention. He even appeared in public service announcements for the non-profit organization Stop MRSA Now.

After college, Hill joined the NBA as the third overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. In his first pro season, he did well—averaging 19.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.77 steals per game.

He even won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, sharing it with Jason Kidd from the Dallas Mavericks. He was super popular and even led the NBA All-Star fan voting as a rookie, getting more votes than Shaquille O’Neal for the 1994-1995 All-Star Game.

Hill spent six seasons with the Pistons before leaving in 2000. During his time there, he was part of the U.S. men’s basketball team. The team won gold at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

Furthermore, he moved to the Orlando Magic in a sign-and-trade deal, which gave him a better contract and let the Pistons get something in return. He signed a $92.8 million contract. It was a seven-year contract with the Pistons.

It was then traded to Orlando for Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace. Unfortunately, during his first year with Orlando, Hill had an ankle injury that kept him from playing all but four games.

He joined the Phoenix Suns in 2007 and managed to play more games despite some small injuries. When his Suns contract ended in 2012, he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. But he only stayed with them for one season before officially retiring on June 1, 2013.

In 1997, Grant signed a huge contract with Fila, getting $80 million for seven years. This was the biggest shoe deal ever at that time. Later, in 2018, he agreed to a lifetime deal with Fila.
