How to Prevent Pipe Corrosion in Plumbing

Pipe Corrosion occurs when substances are in contact with air, water or any chemically active material in the environment. Metals normally undergo corrosion. Rusting is a specific type of corrosion that iron undergoes. We all have metal pipelines at our homes and these pipes carry fluids all the time. They stand a high chance of pipe corrosion and it is necessary to avoid it. Corrosion is preventable since it’s a slow process. Here, we list down some effective ways to avoid corrosion of pipes.

  • 3. Clean The Pipes Regularly

1. Check The Water Quality

Generally hard water with high amounts of calcium and magnesium leads to faster corrosion of pipes. It’s important to look for the pH of water as low pH (acidic water) can corrode the pipes easily. Additionally, check for the average temperature of water in your area. Water that is warmer can significantly increase chances of pipe corrosion as it has more CO2 dissolved. So, you should check the quality of water in your area.

2. Add A Protective Coating Layer

Many times the pipes are made of PVC or steel. PVC doesn’t react as easily as steel does. Stainless steel is a good material which doesn’t corrode easily. Yet, it is always advisable to add a coating layer on it. Coating reduces corrosion speed and intensity as it reacts first, keeping the steel safer. There are different types of coating such as epoxy coating or cement coating. Another way is to galvanize the metal pipes with a layer of zinc. This will avoid easy corrosion of the pipelines.

3. Clean The Pipes Regularly

Cleaning the pipes avoids accumulation of dust and dirt. If pipes are left dirty for long, it clogs. When more materials clog, it’s not good for the pipes. Simply put, more waste, more contact area and more reaction leads to more pipe corrosion. Higher corrosion leads to cracks or holes in your pipelines. Further, corrosion can affect the hinges or screws as well and weaker joints lead to the collapse of the pipeline. Thus, it is always good to have an emergency plumber’s number handy with you.

Usually several microbes and bacteria are present in the pipes. These tiny organisms lead to corrosion. If such organisms are present in pipes for longer duration then it can lead to rapid corrosion. So, clean out the pipes with biocides or some reliable chemicals. Or just pick a brush and scrape off the dirt from the pipelines.

4. Keep The Metals Away

Metals are chemically active materials. In a nutshell, chemical activity means exchange of electrons and ions. Metals are conductors and can easily accomplish this. As a result, when two different metals are put alongside, reaction occurs due to electron exchange. This can lead to significant pipe corrosion in one of the two metals. Ultimately, the pipelines are deemed unusable.

To stop the reaction, add an insulator in between. You guessed it right! Insulators don’t react with metals. So, just bring in an insulator for the rescue to the pipes.

5. Structural Stability of Pipes

Pipes in rocky terrains must be strong. The pipes must resist physical wear and tear. Physical instability leads to greater corrosion. Heavy and fast water flow ascertains easy breakdown of faulty and weak pipes, especially in a rocky area. A shaky pipeline will surely topple sideways or fall apart. So, the pipelines should alway be maintained in a stable position.

6. Consult A Professional Regularly

A professional inspection once in a while avoids bigger troubles and a professional can always guide well. Professional opinions should always be sought as they are the most reliable ones. Pipelines corrosions can be easily controlled. You just have to keep an eye out. Look for leaks from pipes and fixtures or change in water color. Sometimes, water can taste either metallic or bitter as well. So, watch out for these signs. In case you find evidence of corrosion, simply follow the above steps to avoid it.
