A serial killer who claimed to have sold his victims’ remains in barbecue sandwiches has died in prison.
Prison guards found Joe Metheny, 62, unresponsive in Maryland where he was serving two life sentences, having escaped a death sentence on appeal.
The killer, who was then heavily overweight and had a nickname “Tiny”, confessed to police at the time that he was “a very sick person”. According to a contemporary report in the Baltimore Sun, broke down in court when he saw Ms Spicer’s mother. He was found dead at about 3 pm on Saturday.
How Unaware People Ate Human Flesh Because of This Killer
Metheny had asked a friend to help him bury the body of the woman. The friend went on to report Metheny, which led to his arrest. But, in his confession, Metheny revealed some very disturbing information.
He claimed that he had killed up to thirteen people, most of whom were female sex workers. He would put some of the victims’ meat in Tupperware containers and store it in the freezer. Metheny confessed to using the body parts of his victims to prepare human sandwiches.
Unlike other cases of human cannibalism, Metheny was not the only one who fed on the body parts of his victims. Metheny would sell the human sandwiches to unaware passing people.
They thought they were getting regular burgers from a roast beef and pork food trailer. He mixed his victims’ body parts with the roast pork and beef to make the sandwiches he sold.
Metheny Claimed He Had A Harsh Childhood, Which His Mother Denies
Joe Metheny was born on March 2, 1954, in Baltimore, MD, where he ultimately lived most of his life. His father died in a car crash when Metheny was only 6. Also, he claimed his mother worked all the time, so he often spent time with her to live with other families.
Metheny’s mother, however, disputed these claims, saying, “If he was neglected, it was his fault.” Metheny also told people his mother was dead, which was not true.
In early adulthood, Metheny joined the military and claimed he served in Vietnam, which led to severe drug addiction; however, military records indicated he only served in Germany for a brief time in 1973. His mother also denied that he had served in Vietnam, though she blamed many of Metheny’s problems on drugs.
Joseph Roy Metheny’s Insatiable Hunger For Revenge
Joe Metheny had always been rough. He endured a childhood of neglect with an absent, alcoholic father and a mother forced to work extra shifts to support her six children. They lived in Essex, near Baltimore.
Not many other details we know about his younger years, but his mother says he joined the Army in 1973 when he was 19. They lost touch after that.
Upon leaving the Army, Metheny worked blue-collar jobs in lumber yards and as a truck driver. Then came the incident that sparked his desire for revenge.
Joe Metheny’s Death Behind Bars
Police finally caught Joe Metheny in 1996. When a would-be victim named Rita Kemper managed to escape his clutches and ran straight to the police.
During his interrogation, Metheny willingly offered up a confession. He gave details about each of his murders, even mentioning the murder of the fisherman from several years before. According to his confession, he killed 10 people — and authorities say there’s no reason to believe he would’ve stopped there had they not captured him.
Eventually, a jury found him guilty and sentenced Metheny to death. However, a judge overturned this verdict in 2000 and changed it to two consecutive life sentences.
