John Mulaney, a former writer for Saturday Night Live and a stand-up comedian, has had a difficult few years lately.
Mulaney’s friends, including Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen, staged an intervention in December 2020 to get him into treatment for his substance abuse problems. Moreover, his fans had developed parasocial relationships with him and his wife, Annamarie Tendler, whom he had prominently featured in his stand-up sets and on social media. However, he left two months later and announced their divorce in May 2021.
Mulaney’s Latest Show on Netflix
Mulaney, now 40, clean, and better than ever, has a new hour and a half of stand-up comedy material to share with the world in his upcoming Netflix special, John Mulaney: Baby J. Moreover, it will premiere on April 25. However, despite the fact that this special was shot at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Indeed, the comedian does not discuss his recent relationship change or becoming a father. Instead, the title “Baby J” refers to Mulaney’s idealised version of his younger, druggie self.
Furthermore, Mulaney dressed impeccably in a maroon suit, begins Baby J with a humorous anecdote about how his siblings led him to believe he was adopted and that Miss America murdered his real mother.
“You get what I’m saying! We were all placed in isolation. Also, they divorced and went to rehab, and now people look down on us. He performs in his trademark carnival barker voice. Nobody can make a decision! Hey ya! All of the young people adore Bo Burnham.
Drug Use
Mulaney’s dry observations about his drug use, celebrity-studded intervention, and time in rehab, including the reasons why he was late to his own intervention, are the best parts of Baby J.
It took me two hours longer to get here.”When I got there, everyone was even angrier at me,” Mulaney says of his arrival. “And you’re late!” they retorted. “John, we have cocaine,” you could have texted me, and I would have arrived on time, I explained. However, I would have arrived 30 minutes early to assist with chair setup.
“Coked out of my mind,” I ascended to the eighth floor of 30 Rockefeller Centre at seven o’clock that evening, entered the Emmy Award-winning hair department, and asked, “Hey, can I have a haircut?” Mulaney muses. “Oh, John!” exclaimed everyone. This week, you’re not the host, so ha! I made a joke. “Is there a barber shop nearby?” Also, how often do you think to yourself, “Eh, would it be faster to cut the hair”? However, when a junkie walks into your office and requests a haircut? Moreover, that’s basically what happened.
Rolex Watch
Mulaney claims he overdrew his Venmo account the same day and pawned a $12,000 Rolex watch for $6,000. He arrived at the intervention, which he likens to “a ‘We Are the World’ of alternative comedians over the age of 40,” with a group of about a dozen people (six of whom were Zooming in from L.A.).
