Johnny Cash is regarded as one of the greatest country music artists ever. But he has a complicated past. It’s important to remember that he first married Vivian Liberto, even though he is best known for his connection with June Carter. Cash and Liberto shared four children but could not maintain their relationship.
How did things turn out between Cash and Liberto? Liberto said as follows.
Johnny Met Vivian Cash At A Roller Skating Rink
Liberto and Cash have a quicksand romance. When the country singer was only 18 and she was 17, they allegedly met at a roller rink in 1951. Before Cash was sent to Germany to prepare for the Air Force, the two dated for three weeks, they kept in touch via letter during Cash’s absence.
In their letter, the pair disclosed everything, including their innermost concerns and favorite cuisines. Cash regularly ended his letters with “your husband-to-be,” He was sincere, humorous, and vulnerable.
He describes how the post office made fun of him for sending her letters back for storage in one of their love letters:
“Honey, I got made fun of today at the post office. Under “description of contents” on the customs card, I wrote “500 love letters.” They are love letters, and although the folks who received them undoubtedly thought they were simply ordinary, every day love letters are priceless. You are my sweetheart, Viv. That’s how much I adore you.
Liberto received an engagement ring from Cash in the end.
The End Of Their Marriage Line
When Cash returned from Germany in 1954, they were married a month after his arrival. Roseanne Cash, their firstborn child, was born nine months later. At about the same time, Cash’s music career began to take off with his debut single. Cash would keep working at music and acting as Vivian had additional kids and stayed home.
Liberto fought to keep the family intact, but as the divorce process developed over time, her eldest daughter became concerned about her mother’s mental well-being. I’m saying it looking back decades later and thinking, “That was f*cked up,” Roseanne added. “That’s not how kids ought to be raised,”
Liberto Blamed June Carter And Drugs For Her Divorce
The 13-year marriage between Cash and Liberto came to an end. Liberto seems to believe that Carter and Cash’s escalating drug use were to blame. What, then was the reason?
In Liberto’s memoir, I Walked The Line: My Life with Johnny, VC Star writes that everything began to fall apart after they relocated to Casitas Springs in 1961. Cash became increasingly immersed in the drug- and alcohol-fueled Hollywood way of life.
He also became closer to Carter. Liberto stayed at home with their four girls, and she supposedly believed that if she had been able to accompany Cash on his trip, the outcome might have been different for them.
Longtime friend Alice Smith reported that she would often lament that “things” would have been different if she had been able to travel with him rather than raising four children here. She often said that.
Cash first encountered Carter at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1956, according to his Biography. Carter subsequently remarked that Cash’s love for her came at an “inconvenient” time because they were married.
Carter told Rolling Stone in 2000, “I didn’t fall in love with him at a convenient time, and he didn’t fall in love with me at a convenient time.
Liberto Visited Cash After Carter’s Death
Liberto seemed to have always loved Cash. It appears that even though she was the one who initiated the divorce, she was expecting that Cash would take notice. However, he ultimately moved to Tennessee from their California home.
According to Rolling Stone, Carter passed away before Cash, and Liberto visited her ex-husband following Carter’s passing. In 2003, Liberto approached Cash and requested his agreement to publish her memoir. Of all the individuals on the earth, he said to her, “I think it should be you telling your story.”
Cash passed away two months after Liberto last saw him, and Liberto later died from lung cancer complications. However, the truth of what happened between Cash and Carter was revealed in her book, and in the end, she wished for others to be aware of it.
Wrap Up
According to Ann Sharpsteen, the book’s co-author, “She wanted everyone to know June went after Johnny,” according to the VC Star. According to her, much of her suffering and rage sprang from there over the years.
