Your makeup lasts all day… every person who wears makeup has this as one of their biggest dreams. Just imagine your matte foundation or lipstick looking exactly how it looked when you first applied it eight hours ago. Or you’ve just bought this fabulous mascara, but you know it will require touch-ups every few hours and you are just not prepared to do that. But what if we told you there are ways in which you could make your makeup last longer than it usually does? Sounds like a trick. Not!
Check out our tips on how to make your makeup last longer.
1. Prep your skin
Makeup experts always highlight the importance of prepping your skin. Prepping your skin has two benefits. Firstly, if your skin is prepared properly, then your makeup will look smoother and last longer. Secondly, preparing your skin correctly also removes any bacteria and oils that would otherwise build up on the surface of your skin and show through your makeup. You also need to exfoliate. This is dependent on your skin type, but beauty experts recommend exfoliation at least two times a week. Also, use toner on your skin.
Exfoliating and using a toner will help balance the pH levels of your skin and this is always a win. Next up is moisturizing. You need to moisturize as a last step before applying your makeup. This supplies the perfect canvas for your makeup.
2. Primer
We guess this goes according to your makeup needs but primers are essential tools and should be the first step in your makeup look. There are two important things to note with primers: one, it creates a barrier that smooths the surface of the skin, and two, it seals in your skincare. Remember that any makeup item needs to be tailored to your skin type and this makes complete sense when using a primer as it helps to fill in pores and fine lines allowing for a smoother finish for your foundation.
Pro tip: opt for oil-free, water-based primers that will almost always guarantee your foundation stays in place. Now for your eyes, eye primers elevate eyeshadow and allow it to blend easier. Applying eye primer also helps your eyeshadow, as well as your eyeliner, last all day.
3. Foundation
Should we even get into the reason it should not be oil-based? Oil-based products are more likely to make your makeup slide out of place, and we don’t want this. Instead, opt for an oil-free foundation that will give you a long-lasting, smooth look. Don’t forget to use beauty tools to apply your foundation perfectly.
4. Get matching
If you are using any liquid makeup this will of course not offer the long-lasting effect you are after. But what if we told you there is a way to make it work for you. You can use powders that match your liquid makeup but instead of buffing the powder on top of the liquids, you should try stippling the product onto your face. This technique will keep your liquid makeup from moving around your face.
Pro tip: keep some powder on hand in case shiny spots appear on your face during the day.
5. Light layers
If there’s one thing we don’t want, it’s a cakey look. Honestly, less is more is the formula to help your makeup look last all day. Beauty experts recommend applying your makeup with a sponge, but here’s the kicker, apply light layers as this will leave you with a smooth complexion.
6. Priming spray
Priming spray is a gift that keeps on giving. Want to lock in the pigment of your eyeshadow for the entire day? Then spray your eyeshadow brush with priming spray before you apply your eyeshadow.
7. Waterproof options
Again, anything oil or water-base is not going to last all day. Opt for water-proof products, especially for your mascara and eyeliners. These tend to smudge after excessive wear. Want to drop the raccoon effect? Then always opt for products with a waterproof formula.
8. Use setting spray
To set your look you need one last touch and that’s setting spray – a makeup artist’s dream! There are a few benefits to using a setting spray. Firstly, it helps with making sure your makeup lasts all day. Secondly, it refreshes your makeup so you can apply it once or twice throughout the day. Thirdly, it seals your makeup and offers a natural finish. There are also several types of setting sprays such as matte, hydrating, and illuminating.
