Memphis freshman Mikey Williams, once a promising basketball prospect, recently pleaded guilty to a gun charge stemming from a March shooting in his hometown of San Diego. Despite being a highly-ranked prospect before joining the Tigers, Williams faced six felony counts. However, with his recent guilty plea, these charges may be reduced to misdemeanours if he adheres to the terms of his plea agreement.
The agreement requires him to attend behavioral therapy, gun safety, and anger management classes, in addition to completing 80 hours of community service. This marks a pivotal moment for the young athlete’s future as he navigates legal consequences.
In October, a judge decided that Mikey Williams must face trial for allegedly firing a gun into a vehicle carrying five people over the summer. Despite these legal challenges, Williams hasn’t joined the Memphis basketball program yet. Surprisingly, the Tigers haven’t severed ties with him, and he’s still part of the official roster.
Once expected to be a key player, Williams, the top-ranked member of Memphis’ 2023 signing class, hasn’t played due to legal issues. Coach Penny Hardaway brought in experienced players via transfers, contributing to the Tigers’ 5-1 start as they aim for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
“He handles the ball well, moving with flair and finding openings in the defense to score at the basket or draw fouls,”
Noted Eric Bossi, national basketball director at 247Sports, in 2022.
“He’s become a decent three-point shooter, showing impressive elevation when taking jump shots off the dribble. With a massive social media following, Williams brings natural charisma and flair to his game, often playing in front of large crowds.”
As he navigates through legal proceedings, the outcome remains uncertain. However, his talents and potential contributions to the Memphis Tigers add an intriguing layer to his story.
