Minneapolis’ Political Divide Deepens as DFL Revokes Fateh’s Endorsement

Minneapolis is no stranger to heated political battles, but the recent decision by Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party to revoke its mayoral endorsement of State Senator Omar Fateh has sent shockwaves through the city’s progressive circles and beyond. The contest between incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey and Fateh isn’t just about personalities, it’s exposing rifts within the Democratic coalition that could shape the city’s future.

Bitter Divisions and the Fallout of a Controversial Decision

Earlier this summer, Fateh emerged with a hard-won endorsement from the Minneapolis DFL, making history as the first Black candidate to carry the endorsement in three decades. His rise reflected growing grassroots momentum for minority-led leadership and left-leaning populism, backed by a coalition that included pro-union, pro-housing activists and high-profile lawmakers like Representative Ilhan Omar. The endorsement was a clear sign that Minneapolis progressives were ready to chart a new course for the city.

But the jubilation was short-lived. After a contentious convention marred by technical glitches and confusion, state Democratic officials moved to overturn Fateh’s endorsement. They cited major procedural flaws, including an electronic voting system that failed to capture delegate votes and a dramatic undercount that knocked out another candidate before a critical second ballot. The party’s rules committee placed the Minneapolis chapter on probation, calling the entire process a “stain on our party” and warning of long-term consequences for Democratic organizing across Minnesota.

Ilhan Omar, along with more than a dozen elected officials, blasted the reversal in her public statement. She called the move a “dangerous precedent” that silences progressive voices and undermines the will of the delegates. As divisions grow between moderate and progressive Democrats, some fear that disenfranchised voters may become less involved in the party, risking turnout for this year’s mayoral race and beyond.

Jacob Frey’s Strong Mayor System and the Stakes of Reform

Jacob Frey, running for a third term, represents the more centrist branch of the party — a politician who, since 2018, has steered Minneapolis through escalating debates over police reform, affordable housing, and labor policy. With Minneapolis now governed by a “Strong Mayor” system, Frey’s office holds direct authority over all city departments including the troubled police force, a pivotal post-George Floyd shift that redefined local politics. Supporters point to his record of vetoes on controversial measures, and his embrace of reforms that seek stability over uproar.

Fateh, by contrast, has built his campaign on a bold platform of taxing the wealthy, expanding affordable housing through rent controls, and reshaping public safety funding. His background as the first Somali American elected to the Minnesota Senate and a tireless community advocate has brought issues of racial justice and economic disparity to the center of local conversation. Despite this, his campaign now faces headwinds with the loss of party resources and data access following the DFL’s reversal.
