When planning a Bali cruise, two of the most popular regions you’ll read about are Bali’s southwest coast (Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu), and the central region around Ubud. Undoubtedly, these popular areas offer some excellent restaurants, great night life, shopping, and tourist activities, but if you are looking for a quieter and more cultural Bali cruise, away from the crowds, then Bali’s east coast has plenty on offer for visitors while retaining its authentic Balinese charm.
Here are seven activities it’s well worth stepping ashore for when taking a Bali cruise.
1. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling

While you might not actually need to step ashore to go scuba diving and snorkeling, no Bali cruise would be complete without exploring the diving and snorkeling around Tulamben and Amed. Tulamben is home to USAT Liberty shipwreck which is a world class dive and one of the few wrecks that is visible to snorkelers too.
The majority of the diving and snorkeling that can be found close to the shore is over black sand but if you prefer coral reefs, some of the best in Bali can be found nearby.
This region of Bali is ideal for a calm and gentle snorkeling experience which makes it perfect for families with children too. You’ll find a variety of coral reef fish species playfully circulating the reefs and wreck, as well as underwater temples which make for great photo opportunities. For a more adventurous experience in Amed, there are several sites where it isn’t uncommon to see sea turtles and black tips sharks. Visit Lipah Beach or Selang Beach for the best chance of spotting these bigger species.
2. Black Sand Beaches and Catch of the Day
Step ashore from your Bali cruise to the small quaint town of Amed. Find a beach side restaurant or bar and find a spot on the beach to kick back and relax with Mount Agung dominating the skyline in the distance. Amed’s beaches with their glistening black sand are pleasantly quiet compared to the Beaches around the south of the island.
If you are an early riser, look out for the local fishing boats landing with their catches and if you like fresh seafood then you are in the right spot. This area is traditionally an area of fishing villages, and the fishing trade is still at the backbone of the community. You’ll often see local fishermen selling their catch of the day at the side of the road. You can guarantee you are getting the freshest of fish and seafood here and ‘catch of the day’can be found on most menus in town.
3. End the Day at Sunset Point
There is no better way to draw your Bali cruise days to an end than by watching a stunning sunset with an ice cold beer, glass of wine or cocktail! The best sunset spot in Amed is undoubtedly Sunset Point. This elevated point boasts stunning views over Amed, the ocean and across to the mighty Mount Agung.
4. Bukit Cinta – Mount Agung Viewpoint

Bukit Cinta (which literally translates to Hill of Love) offers one of the best views of Mount Agung to be found in Bali. If you don’t mind an early start, try visiting Bukit Cinta for sunrise. On a perfect morning, mist cloaks the low-lying rice fields while pink hues in the sky cast a magical glow on Mount Agung. It’s a breathtaking sight that is well worth the early wake-up call.
5. Pura Lempuyan Temple

If you are looking for more cultural activities during your Bali cruise, a trip to Pura Lempuyan Temple should be on your bucket list. Located on the Lempuyan Mountain, (around a 30-minute drive from Amed), this Balinese-Hindu temple is considered to be one of the most sacred sites in all of Bali.
The temple is made up of seven separate sanctuaries, but most are only familiar with the famous ‘Gateway to Heaven’. The Gateway to Heaven is two large stone gate posts which perfectly frame the view of Mount Agung in the distance.
If you want to include a more active element to your visit there is a 1700 stair climb which leads you through the several other temples that are located within the grounds.
6. Tirta Gangga

Another beautiful cultural attraction is the former royal palace of Tirta Gangga. Today the grounds have been transformed into a lavish garden, adorned in intricate carvings, fountains, and typical Balinese flora and fauna.
Located just 30-minutes outside of Amed, a visit to Tirta Gangga makes for a peaceful and spiritual retreat. To make the most of your time, this trip can easily be combined with nearby Bukit Cinta.
Other Options for a Bali Cruise
If you are planning a longer Bali cruise, it’s possible to experience all that the east coast has to offer in a complete circumnavigation of the island. Ask your chosen cruise operator for possible itineraries and durations.
