Quinta Brunson had a “pinch me” moment on April 1st. In her opening monologue, the host and creator of Abbott Elementary joked. She joked that her SNL appearance had been a long time coming.
When Brunson was a kid, the SNL audition process “seemed long”. So she “created my own TV show, made sure it became really popular. She won a bunch of Emmys, and then got asked to host and it was so much easier!”
The 33-year-old went on to discuss the network comedy’s popularity, comparing it to Friends. Except, she joked, “it’s about a group of teachers instead of a group of friends; instead of New York, it’s in Philadelphia; and instead of not having Black people — it does.”
Brunson’s Statement
Brunson went on to say that her fans believed she, like Janine Teagues, could fix public education. But, she claims, she is the “opposite” of her character. However, she has no idea how to deal with her celebrity. The actress joked that she had to lie to her mother about some of the celebrities she had recently met.
Brunson concluded her speech by saying that teachers are “too often taken for granted”. However, referring to a video she and Barack Obama created to honour her mother’s career in education.
“Please remember how important teachers are. Recognising the work they do every day, and pay them what they deserve,” she begged God.
Brunson appeared in a number of sketches later in the show. Also, included one in which she played one of several drug dealers competing in a bathroom. Another in which she played a doctor who keeps running into the same midwife. Yet another in which she played a partner in a game show called ‘Couple Goals”. Furthermore, she became increasingly concerned as the game progressed.
In a cult documentary akin to Wild Wild Country. The actress also appeared in a scene where she was coerced into playing a bridesmaid. Lil Yachty also made his first appearance on SNL, performing songs from his most recent album, Let’s Start Here.
