Raekwon, whose real name is Corey Woods, grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn and raised by his mother. His father was absent due to addiction, and Raekwon met him only once as a child.

They moved to Staten Island after a robbery, living in Park Hill when he was a teenager. Raekwon’s name comes from the Five-Percent Nation, influenced by his young age. After that, he converted to Islam in 2009. In his upbringing, he saw his mother suffer abuse and that has left a strong impact on him.

Furthermore,  he was kicked out of their home after a conflict with his mother’s boyfriend, leading him to struggle with violence and addiction. Witnessing the crack epidemic’s effects prompted him to change.

Raekwon and Ghostface Killah went to the same junior high. At New Dorp High School, he connected with rappers Remedy, Method Man, and Inspectah Deck. After surviving a shooting, Raekwon turned to rap, realizing its importance.

Wu-Tang Clan

Woods started rapping under the name Sha Raider. In 1992, he became part of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group from New York City. And after some time, he adopted the name Raekwon The Chef and also used other names like Lex Diamonds, Shallah Raekwon, and Louis Rich.

The Wu-Tang Clan released their debut album “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” in November 1993, which went platinum. One of its songs, “C.R.E.A.M.,” also reached #8 on the Billboard rap chart.

In addition, they followed with the double album “Wu-Tang Forever” in 1997, which became 4x multi-platinum. The group released more albums like “The W” in 2000, “Iron Flag” in 2001, and “8 Diagrams” in 2007, alongside solo albums by its members.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

In 1994, Raekwon signed a solo contract with Loud Records and released his first solo single “Heaven & Hell” for the movie Fresh’s soundtrack. Furthermore, his debut solo album, titled “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…,” came out on August 1, 1995.

Although it didn’t sell as much as fellow Wu-Tang member Method Man’s album “Tical,” Raekwon’s album received enthusiastic reviews and quickly gained a reputation as a classic. The album’s story revolves around overcoming struggles, especially involving criminal activities like cocaine trafficking, and transitioning to a better life.

Wu-Tang member RZA, who produced the entire album, described it as resembling a crime mafia tale. Ghostface Killah, another Wu-Tang member, also contributed to over half of the album’s tracks, with some lyrics written in Barbados and Miami.

Raekwon explained that the lyrics are about aspiring to escape the difficult circumstances of the neighbourhood. He further believed the album was meant for a particular lifestyle or those who understood its language. However, over time, it started to be seen as a movie-like experience that earned respect for its authenticity and uniqueness.

“Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…” launched at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In its first week, it shipped around 130,000 copies and was later certified gold, with at least 500,000 copies shipped, by October 1995.

More Solo Works

Wu-Tang Clan

In 1999, Raekwon brought out his second solo album called “Immobilarity.” It climbed into the top ten of the US album charts and became Gold-certified just a month after its release.

Later, in 2003, he released “The Lex Diamond Story,” featuring appearances by Wu-Tang members like Ghostface Killah, Masta Killa, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, and Cappadonna. However, it didn’t match the success of Raekwon’s earlier work.

After some delays, Raekwon finally dropped his highly anticipated fourth solo studio album, “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II,” in the summer of 2009. This album, featuring many Wu-Tang members, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 and reached number two on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

In 2011, Raekwon released his fifth album titled “Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang.” Busta Rhymes and Black Thought also appeared in this album along with some Wu-Tang members. He then released the mixtape “Lost Jewelry” and the album “Fly International Luxurious Art.”

In 2017, his first studio album without fellow Wu-Tang members’ contributions, titled “The Wild,” came out. Raekwon’s upcoming album is “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. III,” continuing his musical journey.

Other Collaborations

In 2010, Raekwon teamed up with fellow Wu-Tang members Ghostface Killah and Method Man for a collaborative album called “Wu-Massacre.” Furthermore, it entered the Billboard 200 at number 12 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.

Raekwon also joined forces with other artists on different songs. For example, in 1997, he contributed to a track on Allure’s debut album. He also performed on Fat Joe’s song “John Blaze,” alongside Big Pun, Nas, and Jadakiss.

Personal Life

He is married and also has a daughter named Cori Andrea Woods and a son named Jabairi Woods. His mother is Andrea Woods. He has a brother too, named Kareen Woods along with two more siblings.
