Nathaniel Wellen, a freshman at Redondo Union High School, is set to make waves on the 15th season of “Shark Tank” as he pitches his invention—a dual-handle umbrella. The episode, airing on Friday, Jan. 19, on ABC at 8 p.m., will showcase Wellen’s entrepreneurial journey and his unique product.
Accompanied by his sister, Katherine Wellen, a student at Parras Middle School, Nathaniel will present his invention to the esteemed panel of investors, known as “sharks,” on the popular business reality show.
Wellen’s journey into entrepreneurship began early, participating in the school district’s Invention Convention for the middle school level during the 2021–22 academic year. His creativity and innovation earned him a spot at the National Invention Convention, where he not only secured second place but also received the prestigious “Originality Award” for his inventive umbrella design. This recognition was heightened by the fact that Wellen holds a granted patent for his dual-handle umbrella, setting his invention apart.
The dual-handle umbrella is specifically designed to enable a parent and child to comfortably share one umbrella simultaneously. Wellen’s success at the national level secured him an invitation to compete at the global stage of the competition.
The “Shark Tank” episode will feature impassioned entrepreneurs, including Wellen, seeking investment deals for their products. The diverse range of pitches includes a damage-free wall light, a silicone placemat with an edge, and a gluten-free alternative to popcorn.
Mike Soo Hoo, a Redondo Union business, entrepreneurship, and finance teacher, expressed the school district’s pride in Nathaniel’s achievements and emphasized the district’s commitment to fostering innovation and creativity among students. Soo Hoo, who serves as Wellen’s teacher, extended his best wishes to Nathaniel and looks forward to witnessing the lasting impact of his invention.
As Nathaniel Wellen steps onto the “Shark Tank” stage, the Redondo Beach Unified School District rallies behind him, celebrating his accomplishments and representing a dedication to nurturing the inventive spirit of its students. The upcoming episode promises to showcase not only Wellen’s invention but also the supportive educational environment that encourages young minds to reach new heights in innovation and entrepreneurship.
