Former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins might find a new home in the National League, with recent reports indicating ongoing discussions between the Chicago Cubs and Hoskins’ representatives for a potential free-agent deal. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi revealed the ongoing contact between the parties on Tuesday.
Hoskins, who spent the past seven seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, is set to explore new opportunities in the offseason. The decision came after President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced Bryce Harper’s transition to first base for the 2024 season.
The 2023 season saw Hoskins sidelined due to a torn ACL suffered during spring training. Although there was a slim chance of a return if the Phillies reached the World Series, their playoff journey ended in the National League Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

One year and multiyear contract proposals have been discussed. @MLB @MLBNetwork
A beloved figure during his time in Philadelphia, Hoskins emerged as a fan favorite. Drafted by the Phillies in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft, he witnessed the team’s rebuilding phase firsthand. Hoskins made a significant impact as a rookie after his MLB debut in the latter part of the 2017 season.
Throughout his Phillies career, spanning 667 regular-season games, Hoskins showcased his power with 148 home runs and maintained batting splits of .242/.353/.492/.846. His contributions, including memorable moments during the team’s 2022 NL pennant and World Series run, solidified his place in Phillies history.
Spotrac estimates a potential four-year, $84 million contract for Hoskins in free agency. As discussions with the Chicago Cubs continue, baseball enthusiasts await the outcome of these negotiations and the potential for Rhys Hoskins to make a new impact with a different National League team.
