The Right Time For a Remake

Stories with fierce competition set in dystopian worlds, like the version of The Running Man starring Schwarzenegger, are quite common in modern fiction. Interestingly, King wrote about such themes a second time under the pseudonym Bachman after his 1979 book The Long Walk.

In that story, teenagers face a deadly competition where they get killed if they slow down to less than 4 miles per hour too many times. These stories also share some similarities with an earlier classic, the 1948 Shirley Jackson short story “The Lottery.”

Dystopian Movies are in Vogue

In the years following The Running Man, the type of dystopian story it represents has become even more popular. You can see this in the success of The Hunger Games and the Japanese movie Battle Royale. These stories involve teenagers fighting to the death in movie series based on books.

Interestingly, there’s a new Hunger Games movie, the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, scheduled to be released in November. Dystopian movies have always been the cream of cinematic society. Impoverished people fighting against a powerful government is not only spectacular but also symbolic.
