Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been in prison for about 7 years now. She will once again be a free person in December of this year. This is indeed a very good news for her.
She was sent to prison in the year 2016 for killing her mother. However, her story has many deeper layers. Much of which was explored during her trial. After 40 years from one prison to another, she is finally taking back her freedom.
Story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Her Mom
Gypsy and her mother Claudine “ Dee Dee” Blanchard seemed like any other loving mother-daughter duo to the rest of the world. But their relationship was built of many darker secrets. In reality, her mother abused her from a very young age. Dee Dee also managed to make sure that her daughter never gets any way to express her pain and suffering.
The little girl was a victim of Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome. This form of abuse takes place when a guardian induces or exaggerates any illness to gain affection or sympathy. It is indeed a very rare form of abuse.
DeeDee had the plan perfectly chalked out. She had all her neighbors and her closest friends convinced that her daughter suffered from leukemia, muscle dystrophy, and other ailments. This started when her daughter was only seven years old.
All the ways to express her pain or suffering were also closed. Dee Dee made sure to do it. She convinced her daughter that if she tried to run or flee, police would not believe her and bring her right back.
Dee Dee also never allowed her to talk to anyone including their neighbors. She had to stay strapped to her wheelchair willingly. Otherwise, she would face her mother’s wrath.
The Frustration, The Pain, and The Murder
The little girl grew up suffering. She spent three decades being isolated and abused by her own mother. The boiling point came when she was 32 years old. It was then that she and her boyfriend, Nick Godejohn planned to kill Dee Dee. The plan was also executed perfectly. However, the police were quick to catch their trail. Nick would go on to commit many more murders.
Both of them were charged with first-degree murder as soon as Dee Dee’s body was found. The little girl came out of one prison only to be thrown into another. She was just 32 years old when she was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Her boyfriend was also sentenced without the chance of early parole in the year 2019. Prior to her sentencing she also spent some time in the Green County Jail and the local county jail.
According to both of their testament, Gypsy reached out to Nick through social media. They soon connected and Nick came to visit her. For them, it was love at first sight. She talked him into the plan and they together killed Dee Dee.
Now she is being released in December of the year 2023. She was sentenced in the year 2016. Up until now, she has spent about eighty-five percent of her sentence.
The court thinks that her life deserves a second chance. She has also often said that she does not deserve the sentence that was given to her. She has also argued time and again that the motives behind her actions.
The Documentary: Mommy, Dead and Dearest
The story of this mother-daughter duo sent waves throughout social media. It struck some of the deepest chords among people. The story was the inspiration behind the HBO Documentary Mommy, Dead And Dearest.
Perhaps the creative liberty taken by the makers has made it shift from the facts quite a bit, still, it puts up the essence of the story quite well. It also inspired a Hulu miniseries named The Act.
Conclusion
After spending nearly 40 years of her life, from one captivity to another, Gypsy will finally get her freedom. She will be given her freedom in the December of the year 2023. While her boyfriend will not be getting any early parole, she will be set free after serving eighty-five percent of ten year sentence.
