Strange Way of Life, Pedro Almodóvar’s upcoming short film, stars Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as a sheriff and a cowboy entangled in a troubled Wild West romance. The 30-minute film will have its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
In “Bitter Creek,” Pascal plays Silva, a cowboy who returns to the desert after 25 years to see Sheriff Jake (Hawke). Despite the significance of their reunion, Sheriff Jake has summoned Silva to assist with the investigation of a local woman’s murder.
After a scene filled with blood, dust, and tense horniness, Silva finally snaps at Sheriff Jake, “You never loved me, you never loved anyone in your life!” Jake spits at him and points his gun at him, saying, “Don’t say that.”
Life Came Full Circle for Almodovar
When Almodóvar was approached to direct Brokeback Mountain in the mid-2000s, he declined because he didn’t believe Hollywood would allow him to make the film he wanted to make. Strange Way of Life represents a kind of coming full circle moment for him.
“I never imagined they’d give me complete freedom and independence to create whatever I wanted,” he told IndieWire last year. “Nobody told me that; they just said, ‘You can do whatever you want,’ but I was aware of a constraint.”
“Could be like my answer to Brokeback Mountain,” Almodóvar said of Strange Ways of Life in the same interview. “There will be a showdown between them, but the story is really very intimate.”
