The sixth day of fighting between Israel and Iran has changed things in a lot of places outside of the Middle East. Early on Wednesday, big explosions shook Tehran as Israeli planes hit places where weapons and centrifuges are made. Iran fired two rounds of missiles in response, but most of them were stopped by Israel’s defenses. Notably, the amount of revenge Iran has taken has gone down. Israeli officials say this is because almost a third of Iran’s missile launchers have been destroyed.
Former President Donald Trump has gotten a lot of attention from the media as things have become worse. Trump called a high-level conference in the White House Situation Room to talk about the United States’ position after leaving the G7 early. He told Tehran on social media that they had to “unconditionally surrender.” He also said that the US knew exactly where Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, was. Trump said there were no plans to attack Khamenei right away, but the way he said it makes it sound like something is changing.
What Happens Next?
Experts say that a frontal assault by the US may make things worse in the whole area. Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said that “any American intervention would be a recipe for all-out war.” Ali Bahreini, the Iranian ambassador to the UN, said the same thing and blamed the US for letting Israel act violently.
Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar wrote a letter to the United Nations in which he made it clear that Iran was enriching uranium to the level needed for weapons and that he was using diplomacy to gain time. He said that Operation Rising Lion was needed because Iran was building up its nuclear weapons.
