Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are two cinema heavyweights. When they come together to make a sports drama film sparks are bound to fly. Air is no different. The dazzling new trailer came out a day ago and has racked up a record 2.8 million views on YouTube. It has certainly got a lot of people due to its unique premise. Air follows the story of Sonny Vaccaro, a brilliant young executive at Nike who hatches a plot to create a new brand of sportswear.
His plan involves signing Michael Jordan, then a rising star in the NBA, and launching a campaign centered around him. The story also showcases the brainstorming that went on behind closed doors Nike was creating its legendary brand.
Affleck, who plays Nike co-founder Phil Knight, looks cool and hippie at the same time because of his attire. His response to Vaccaro suggesting the name Air Jordan is hilarious and he expresses visible hesitation at the whacky nature of the idea.
We will also get a glimpse at Deloris Jordan, Michael Jordan’s mother, who played a very important role in the clinching of the deal.
A Promising Watch
Air Jordans are everywhere these days. You can find them on the streets, the basketball grounds and even on the ramp. The classic Jumpman silhouette which shows Michael Jordan leaping in the air for probably a slam dunk has been as recognizable as the basketball superstar himself. They come in various shapes, sizes and variants now.
However, what will be of great interest is the fact how this line of shoes came to be in the first place. And as is the tradition with these things, a movie that captures the process of creating the intellectual property in the first place is likely to garner much interest.
Air promises to be a fun watch. The trailer does not give away much but does reveal a cast of colorful characters. Vaccaro is determined, intelligent and charismatic. Deloris Jordan believes in her son with great passion and Knight is a man who wants his company to grow as much as the next entrepreneur. Much love has gone into making the movie. It shows in the few frames which lay down the story for the viewers.
Release
Air will arrive in theaters on April 5. The movie will be available to stream on Amazon Prime a few months after release contrary to the traditional release window of within a few weeks.
Needless to say, fans are excited to see this latest offering by Affleck, which is his seventh collaboration with Damon.
