This year, the center of focus is the new Apple Watch Ultra, a bigger, shinier, and more robust enhancement to its wearable line. Additionally, it can withstand hostile environments.
Now the question that arises is: whether it is easy to repair and should those environments cause damage. This particular Apple Watch model is the first in the company’s line of Apple Watches to have visible screws on the back of the case. But fixing the watch as a whole is still challenging because of the screen.
Under the display is a gasket that, according to iFixit, acts like glue. Taking off the watch’s black plate destroyed it. Therefore keeping this component intact might require a formal repair by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A gasket necessary for the device’s water resistance got damaged during the dismantling.
The Apple Watch complies with EN13319, a widely accepted standard for diving computers and gauges as long as that gasket is still in place. It can operate down to a maximum depth of 40 meters or 130 feet. It has zero resistance without it.
Therefore, one must remove the screen before installing other parts like the battery and Taptic Engine. Teardown confirmed the specifications for the Apple Watch Ultra. Its 2.1-watt-hour battery is 60% larger than the Apple Watch Series 8’s 1.19-watt-hour battery.
As always, iFixit has the fix. In a new video, the right-to-repair nerds at iFixit break down the Apple Watch Ultra screw by screw. Also available for your viewing pleasure is the deconstruction video down below.
Teardown of Apple Watch Ultra
This particular model is the first Apple Watch in the company’s lineup to feature visible screws on the rear of the case. However, because of the screen, repairing the watch as a whole is still tricky. There is a gasket underneath the display that, according to iFixit, acts as adhesive.
While removing the Watch’s backplate the gasket got destroyed. Therefore preserving it might call for an official fix from Apple or another Apple Accredited Service Provider. The assembly process damaged a gasket required for the device’s water resistance was harmed.
The disassembly confirms the Apple Watch Ultra’s 542 mAh battery, 76% larger than the 308 mAh battery found in the Apple Watch Series 8 model. The Ultra’s substantially larger speaker, which reviews claim makes phone calls louder, is also better seen in the teardown.
Thanks to its gasket, the Apple Watch complies with EN13319, a widely used standard for diving computers and gauges. It can go down a maximum of 40 meters, or 130 feet. Without it, it has no resistance at all.
To install the battery and Taptic Engine, one must remove the screen. According to the iFixit breakdown, the Apple Watch Ultra is still a challenging gadget to fix. Apple approved Indian merchants to sell the Apple Watch Ultra.
How much does maintenance cost? Authorized Apple channels require $80 to replace the battery. In order to fix more difficult issues such as screen damage, the Apple center requires $320.
