There are some highly gruesome cases of murder in the murky world of crime. Incidents that make the skin crawl and hair rise. But even among them, one of the most shocking cases is that of a nightclub hostess named Fan Man-Yee. Referred to as the infamous Hello Kitty Murder case, it involved the kidnapping and brutal torture and murder of the said hostess. It happened in the year 1999 in Hong Kong. This case is even more terrifying because it also contained eerie traces of the occult.
The Gruesome Murder
The three men who kidnapped Man-Yee did not simply keep the atrocities at torture and murder. After she passed away, they chopped off her head and skinned it. Then they stuffed the skull inside a Hello Kitty mermaid doll, which resulted in the incident gaining its notorious name. The police got a whiff of the case when a 14-year-old girl reached the Hong Kong police with her guardian and claimed that the ghost of a woman was tormenting her. She was in great distress. Quite naturally, the police did not believe her at first. But then there was an astonishing twist in the case.
The girl revealed the blood-spattered ghost of the woman who was haunting her was one whom she also had a hand in killing. Now the police grew alert and swung into action. Furthermore, the girl said that she was an unwilling participant in the murder. Three men were the actual murderers and she agreed to take them to the place where the crime had taken place. The police followed her to a rundown flat in the Kowloon and made the horrifying discovery. From here, the police started investigating further and uncovered a bloody trail.
The Trail
Fan Man-Yee had a check marked past. Abandoned by her parents at birth, she grew up in an orphanage and soon fell into the clutches of drugs and illicit sex work. At 21 she was a nightclub hostess and frequently met dangerous men, like Chinese mobsters. One day, she tried to steal 4000 Hong Kong dollars from a drug dealer named Chan Man-Lok and he caught her red-handed. Man-Lok asked her to return his money as well as 10000 Hong Kong dollars as interest. Naturally, Fan-Mee could not do so and Man-Lok, along with two friends Leung Shin-Cho and Leung Wai-Lun, forced her into a prostitution racket.
The three men repeatedly beat and raped Fan-Mee. They also put her through inhumane acts of torture like pouring hot candle wax onto her skin and burning her feet. Eventually, she died from the insane abuse. The men then dismembered her and stuffed the skull inside the mermaid dull. They cooked the pieces of flesh so they would not decompose.
But there was no escape from the police. They caught Man-Lok and his friends and put them on trial. They tried to escape by framing Fan-Mee as a prostitute who was in a mutual agreement with them to run a local brothel. The court threw this version out and sent the man to jail for life. The 14-year-old girl who cooperated with the police went free.
