Phillips posted two fascinating pictures on Instagram from “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which shows Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn for the first time and Joaquin Phoenix repeating his Oscar-winning performance.
Phillips hinted to the publication date of October 2024 in a holiday letter, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. In the first picture, Arthur Fleck of Phoenix is visible through a cell window bearing the number “E258.” Lady Gaga makes her pictorial debut as a carefree Harley Quinn in the second image, looking lovingly at Phoenix as he’s dressed in his trademark Joker outfit and makeup.
The mysterious Joker and Harley are shown navigating a complicated romance within Arkham Asylum in this highly anticipated musical sequel, despite the lack of official details. “Folie à Deux” suggests a “shared psychosis,” implying a distinct interaction between the protagonists.
With eleven Oscar nominations, including a victory for Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir, the 2019 “Joker” was a global phenomenon that over $1 billion at the box office and received critical praise. Both collaborators and fans have expressed interest in the musical approach of the sequel.
Guðnadóttir, who is returning as the composer for the sequel, expressed her excitement about the unconventional choice, stating, “It’s both logical and also very surprising for me as well as the audience.” She anticipates a beautiful unfolding of the narrative.
Star Zazie Beetz also chimed in, teasing that the musical aspect might defy expectations, saying, “I don’t think it’s going to be what they expect, around it being musical.” Beetz highlighted the everyday expressions of music and dance in people’s lives, suggesting that the musical element could seamlessly integrate into the storyline.
