Several reports have spoken about the fights and feuds among the star cast of “Charmed” for many years. For fans of “Charmed” and its long-running behind-the-scenes drama, it was a tough thing to parse. The show’s legacy has remained intact in the minds of the audience. Things began to rekindle when one of the show’s stars, Shannen Doherty, started revealing all on her podcast. It has now got weirder.
The rivalry between Milano and McGowan was reignited after their war of words on Twitter in 2020. The producer Krista Vernoff also weighed in about the show becoming “bad for the world”. Talk of feuds, firings and mean-girl behaviour circled the cast. It continued with a few harsh words exchanged off-set long after the series ended 2006.
Doherty discussed her experience playing Prue Halliwell with longtime friend and co-star Holly Marie Combs, who played Doherty’s sister, Piper Halliwell, on “Charmed.” She said the tension between Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty led to the firing. In the December 18 episode, Doherty said tension built between her and Alyssa Milano. It was over a rivalry regarding media attention and pay. Doherty said she exited the show because Milano threatened to sue producers alleging a toxic work environment if they didn’t fire Doherty, and they consented.
Even to Combs, Milano strong-armed the producers into firing Doherty after three seasons. Doherty has often said she chose to leave “Charmed” voluntarily. But in the recent turn of events, it appears that was just a cover-up. Her team planned it at the time since she had already been forced off “Beverly Hills 90210.”
Shannen Doherty and Hollie Marie Combs revealed on the “Let’s Be Clear” podcast (via Huff Post) that Doherty was fired from “Charmed”. It happened due to an alleged request their co-star Alyssa Milano gave producers. A feud among the actors reportedly led to Milano telling “Charmed” producers they had to fire one of them. She further said if it was her, then she would threaten to sue them for a hostile work environment.
The actor, remembering that incident, said, “My representatives, I remember them looking at me at the time and said, ‘No, no, no, your career won’t survive another firing, so we’re just going to say that you chose to leave,’ ”. She added further, “I remember I started laughing, going, ‘Who is going to believe that I’m crazy enough to leave a hit show?’”
Doherty was an original cast member on “Charmed”. She was working alongside Milano and Combs. Her character was killed after three seasons. She was then replaced by Rose McGowan, who stayed with the show until it wrapped after Season 8. Recently, Combs was the guest on Doherty’s new podcast episode. Doherty with Combs revealed that “Charmed” producer Jonathan Levin once told her that Milano approached him with the request.
Doherty’s career faced a severe backlash due to the reckless behaviour of her co-star. Talk of feuds, firings, and mean-girl behaviour has circled the cast since the beginning. The ultimatum was a huge blow to the actor’s career.
