A Linebacker and an Actor

A former NFL linebacker, Carl Weathers achieved enduring success in Hollywood by portraying a boxer named Apollo Creed despite transitioning from a different sport. In the mid-’70s, he started with minor roles, gaining overnight fame in 1976 for portraying the fictional boxer, a rival to Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa. Weathers featured in the original “Rocky” film and reprised the role in its sequels. His character, Apollo Creed, continued influencing subsequent films, inspiring the “Creed” series starring Michael B. Jordan. Also, he was phenomenal in Rocky. Playing the antagonist in a Stallone movie? Now, that is something interesting.

After a series of action-packed films in the ’80s, Carl Weathers shifted his focus to television, taking on roles in series such as “Street Justice” and “In the Heat of the Night.” His diverse résumé also included minor parts in Adam Sandler-led comedies like “Happy Gilmore,” “Little Nicky,” and “Eight Crazy Nights.” Sandler paid tribute to Weathers as “a truly great man” in a social media post shared on Friday. Also, that is one of the greatest things about Weathers. A man of many talents, as we can see. It is tragic how a man like that suddenly passes away.
