Why is Sleep Important? 5 Reasons For Getting A Good Night’s Rest

Why is Sleep Important?

People Need Sleep: While exact data is hard to find, there have been laboratory tests which show avoiding sleep may be lethal. Scientists studied rats, and after a certain amount of sleeplessness, they all died, or were put down by the researchers in what was seen by them as an act of mercy; whether or not that was the case.

The reasons those rats died weren’t directly sleep-related. However, a lack of proper rest was definitely a strong contributing factor.

You need your sleep. Modern science hasn’t conducted conclusive human trials showing the lethality of sleep deprivation beyond controversy, but then again, science isn’t quite as exact as society would have us believe. The point is, it’s common sense you need rest; and here we’ll briefly cover a few key reasons why.

1. Mental Acuity: Better Sleep Sharpens The Mind

Better Sleep Sharpens The Mind

If you’re not properly rested, it can have the same effect on the mind and body as “getting half in the bag”, as the saying goes. Sleep deprivation is like drunkenness. When you’re unrested, the brain is having trouble. It’s like leaving a computer running complex tasks for an extended period of time. Do that too often and the computer will either crash or malfunction.

2. Physical Health: The Body Needs Proper Rest

The Body Needs Proper Rest

It’s not just your brain that needs rest. The body also has to have a reprieve every now and again. Working out at the gym, or working in a general occupational sense, will deplete your body of caloric content gradually. Avoid too much sleep too long and eventually, the body starts stashing away calories from food just to keep functioning.

Did you know if you sleep either too much or too little, it can contribute to obesity? This is one of the reasons why. Too much sleep keeps you sedentary, too little sleep forces the body to kick into a sort of “survival mode” that stores calories. So if you want to be physically healthy, you need regular, balanced rest.

3. Finances: Sleep Better And Be More Productive

When your mind and body are aligned in terms of rest, you’ll be stronger physically and mentally. Increased physical and mental strength leads to increased productivity. Increased productivity produces more efficient financial stability. So if you’re having trouble sleeping, figure out why.

Sometimes the problem is something as simple as a bad mattress. If that’s the case, check out this blog article about mattresses for adjustable beds at US-Mattress. You may find that simply switching things up a little in the bedroom ultimately helps you get the sleep you need.

4. Sleep Is Nice: Simply Put, Getting Rest Feels Good

Simply Put, Getting Rest Feels Good

This one’s a bit of a no-brainer: who doesn’t like a good night’s sleep? Even if you’ve got night terrors, you’ve got to rest eventually. That’s about the only reason sleep may not be an enjoyable prospect.

For that situation, a little therapeutic help may be in order. For the majority of people who don’t contend with such issues, the prospect of a good night’s rest or a fine afternoon nap is nothing but pleasurable.

5. Emotional Stability: Insomnia Causes Unnecessary Irritation

You don’t need Harvard to tell you if you don’t get enough sleep, it puts you in a bad mood—or, if not a bad mood, at least a sort of detached and dissociated fugue bordering on zombie-like hypnotism. Emotional stability is hard enough to consciously regulate when you’ve had sleep. So for this reason alone, it’s absolutely fundamental to get proper rest.

Sleeping Right Is Fundamental

The points listed here barely scratch the surface on the advantages of proper sleep. Getting enough sleep is good for the mind, the body, the wallet, and overall emotional stability. It also feels good to get a night of sleep when you’re weary.

So get a good mattress if you’re having trouble, find ways of fighting insomnia, and give the mind as well as the body the proper rest both need.
